I’ve narrowed my search down to two units. The new Pioneer 633H or the JVC M-100S. Can I get some input on those who might use or tried both?

Gshelley61: I know you have the 633H. Does the hard drive give you a lot of editing features similar to a computer or is it real basic? Is it worth the money over the DR-M100S regardless of hard drive? Which has better filters? Any input is welcome from all.

    Thanx

  2. It depends whether you want a hard drive or not. The hard drive makes things much more convenient as far as editing goes, plus you don't have to burn to disc what you don't want to archive.

I think the JVC DR-M100S is the best unit without a hard drive out there, great quality recordings, especially for the price, about $220. I also think the Pioneers are the best HDD units available, great quality as well. The Pioneer 533H can be had for $359, same as the 633H but smaller hard drive (80gig).

bbanderic: Thanks for the reply. So your happy with your 633H? What about the DR-M300S by JVC that's out this year? Is it the DR-M100S with a hard drive?

  4. The new Pioneer hard drive units (531, 533, 633) are hard to beat because of the numerous adjustable input video image processing controls they have. They've also improved the MPEG2 encoder. I've been using a DVR-531H lately and really like it. A great alternative to the JVC units, which I also like very much.

  5. The new JVC HDD unit is the DR-M300S, I'd love to check that one out when it's available. When I bought my 633 I had no idea that JVC was coming out with a new HDD recorder, otherwise I probably would have waited. I'm very happy with the 633 now that I found a way around that damn EPG.

Which one of the three machines yield the best picture quality. Gshelly, I know you have the Pioneer, the JVC, and the Sony. Which is the best in final picture quality.

after i read the press released in jvc site usa, but no in japan or asia (in asia still DR-MH30S). this product is continue from their product DR-MH30S (released in June 2004) with more some feature.

    DR-MH30S:
-Super MPEG Encode Pre-Processor - a three-step process that takes place before MPEG-2 encoding of the input signal. A time base corrector eliminates jitter, a frame synchronizer provides frame normalization, and Motion Active Noise Reduction provides a clearer image than with conventional frame noise reduction, such as 3D noise reduction, by using an algorithm that predicts motion and applying it between moving pictures to minimize image lag.

-Super MPEG Post-Processor - enhances playback image quality through block noise reduction circuitry, Color DigiPure that provides 3D noise reduction along with color and detail enhancement, and Hadamard noise reduction to eliminate mosquito noise.

-And speed dubbing up to 32x

DR-MH300S (DR-MH300S released July 2005), same above with more feature:
-Bit Rate Optimizer — (HDD—>DVD) – Improves DVD-recorded picture quality, especially in scenes with fast motion and many moving objects, which require a drastically higher bit rate than simple scenes with little movement. With direct recording, the recorder cannot change the bit rate flexibly enough to allocate the appropriate number of bits to each scene, which results in MPEG compression noise. JVC’s Bit Rate Optimizer first analyzes the video content while recording it to the hard disk drive, then transfers the signal from the hard disk drive to the DVD, using the first pass signal analysis to take into account the recording’s total bit requirement. This saves bit allocation for difficult scenes without wasting it on simple scenes.

-And speed dubbing up to 64x

    the point with this product;
-Motion Active Noise Reduction provides a clearer image than with conventional frame noise reduction, such as 3D noise reduction, by using an algorithm that predicts motion and applying it between moving pictures to minimize image lag.

anybody have more information about this feature (sample picture, VirtualDub-filters, Avisynth-filters)?

-because this product not support DL, can i transfer recorded movie from dvd recorder to computer directly using their firewire?

i'm actually when encode laserdisc 1:30 hours movie using TMPG have disc space around 6.5GB with VBR 9200, so i must use DL.

so this product is my choice when support DL or can transfer recorded movie from dvd recorder to computer using their firewire.

for the press released pioneer from japan site (no in usa) their product that support DL has been spread around the world and have speed dubbing up to 100x, have
-the "DianaCircuit," the full-digital signal processor employed in Pioneer high-end DVD recorders, the new recorders' high-quality video engine realizes finer, clearer videos.

anybody have more information about this DianaCircuit?

-XP+ recording mode (to HDD), which allows recording even better quality images at 15 Mbps, besides the previous highest picture-quality recording mode "XP" (10 Mbps).

so for this time my choice is pioneer that support DL
