    please help a military member.

i am trying to convert some hour long safety videos from vhs to dvd so that i can hand them out to people in class as study aids.

i am able to connect my cannon zr 85 to the vcr and copy to minidv format. none of the pcs at work had ieee 1394 capability so at my home pc i installed an ieee1394 card and purchased a cable. now im stuck. how do i get from the cam to the computer. i tried a few copies of freeware from download.com but they wouldnt capture the media or i didnt know how to use them.

when i use windows movie maker, it does not recognize an input source for the video.

do i need drivers for wmm to find my cannon zr85?
what free software is idiot proof so i can take the movie and burn it to dvd?
does anyone see any other problems with my setup?

    thanks in advance

Check whether your system is recognizing the firewire card. This probably is not a "Canon" issue. WMM should work just fine with the Canon camcorder but you will need to install whatever driver software that came with the card.

If the card is installed properly, Windows XP DirectShow will detect the camcorder on connection.

Read the install instructions, you might need to update your DirectX.

Once you get the card working with windows, try WinDV for the transfer. Once you have the DV-AVI file on the HDD, you can convert it to whatever format you desire. Expect file size to be 13.5GB per hour.

The card is being recognized as a network connection. Turn this function off. This may be the problem. Firewire from the camcorder to the PCI card is -not- networking.
