How do I convert a AC3 5.1 AVI movie to the mpeg2 format for use on a standalone DVD player?
I dont have a DVD writer so Im looking to burn to multiple CD's.
Dolby Digital 5.1 is of upmost importance as I have a 5.1 setup that I like to take advantage of.
As I understand, I need to rip the audio and video seperatley then combine later.
Any recommendations?

5.1 DD is not a part of either the VCD or SVCD standards. That leaves you with MiniDVD, which AFAIK is not that widely supported either.
I'd be checking to see if your player can play raw MPEG or DivX/XviD AVIs if you are not prepared to purchase a DVD Burner, as I personally think MiniDVD is a waste of time. You want to retain 5.1 DD which means you're gonna be limited to about 15-20 mins per CD unless you skimp on the video quality big-time. Check out the :"What is ..." pages to the top left, download a few samples, burn them and try them out in your palyer, or alternatively, search the DVD Players section for your player and see what others have been able to play.
In all honesty, if I were you I'd buy a DVD burner. For only $100 they give you soooo much more flexibility in doing what you want to do. Either that or invest in a cheap n nasty DVD player that will play DivX/XviD. You'll fit most movies onto either 1 or 2 CDs with DD 5.1 and pretty good video quality. If in doubt, Google it.
