Hello. Need some help here. I bought my Mirror Door G4 mac in the Fall of 2002. I have done tons of burns onto DVD with no major problems. Been using the maxwell 1x-4x speed DVD-R. I just pick up last week a spindle of maxwell 1x-8x speed DVDS. My G4 has a Pioneer DVR-104. I check out apple site on which computers need the updates. I think my computer already had it installed in it to use this higher speed media when I bought it. Should I update the DVD burner anyway or will this cause more problems? If I don't update will I destory the DVD burner indside? Any help will do. There's gone to be other Mirror Door G4 users users out there. Thanks......

Hello.
most of us MDD's have pulled our factory installed DVR-104s,
and upgraded to DVR-108's and DVR-109s. The DVR-104
that came factory installed on the MDD has a limit of
only burning on 2x on approved 2x media, 1x on
most media rated 1x-4x.
1x-8x may cause you many a coaster, and eventually wear
out the drive, yes. at best, the one that don't make coasters
will burn only at 1x speed anyway.
As for the Apple firmware update, if you look in your
system profiler ( accessible by clicking the "learn more"
button in the "About This Mac" panel), you should see
your drive listing, along with a firmware designation of A227.
This lets you know that your drive has had the firmware
patch that will enable 2x writing to 2x rated media,
1x writing to all 1x-4x media(by default).
I would heartily reccommend you UPGRADE the burner ASAP.
8x is the current speed standard for most media now,
and suppliers of good rated 1x-4x media, that can
be burned at 2x are dwindling fast. Brands that still
burn as 2x (but are rated 1x-4x) on the box are
