Pioneer DV-444 - different in the UK??!!??

Hi guys!
I've just been told by a very good UK supplier that the Pioneer dv-444 will only play VCDs and nothing of higher resolution (ie. SVCD, XVCD etc)

Is this true? cos I was just about to buy one seeing as everyone in this forum raves about them!

Any help would be much appreciated.

I do believe this unit will play xvcd's and svcd's. Check the DVD Players compatablility list. But I will suggest that you buy the 440 model rather than the 444. Many disturbing comments regarding the progressive scan. Cheers Sue! -garman
