  1. I just bought a DVR-109 (yes, I've just read that 110 has now replaced it, but it doesn't matter to me).

I did what I thought was a relatively simple job of replacing my CD writer with the 109. But now when I look in My Computer there is no D or E drive visible (D=DVDROM, E=Pioneer 109). This was the first time I have attempted this so I guess it won't take much to puzzle me. But I don't know what's up. I'm pretty sure I made all the connections correctly but do any of you guys have any ideas?

    Hi there fella,

Don't mean to insult your intelligence but will start with the basics.

I know you said that you think you've made all the connects but just double check. You should have both a IDE cable and a power cable. The power cable can be stiff so make sure it's in firmly. Try the eject button to ensure it has power.

If its got power but still not recognised by your computer reboot the system and enter your bios. your difference devices should be listed there. If the 109 isn't listed come back to us.

Assuming it is there continue to boot into windows. Once in windows go to your hardware device manager (Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manager). There you should see your 109 listed in one of the folders. Right mouse click and go into properties. Down the bottom there is an option to disable the device (its a pull down menu). Make sure this is set to "enable".

If you can't find it in Device Manager, stay in Hardware and near the top is an option called "Hardware Wizard" or something similar. Click on that to see you can find it though there.

After all this do a restart and see if its detected. If not you may have to reconfigure your drive jumper settings but we can worry about that later...

What e404pnf said, and make sure you didn't inadvertently pull the other end of the IDE cable loose from the MB.

BTW, the drive letters are assigned automatically by the OS, so they may be different. If that's a problem, they can be changed easily in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management. Then right click on the drive and you will see the options.

  5. Okay I double checked the connections. The IDE and power cables are firmly in place along with a lead from the DVDROM to the soundcard. I am sure that the IDE leads are connected to the drives in the same positions as before I started, I'm not 100% about the power cables as I have messed around a bit. I have a lead with 'P6' connected to the DVDROM and 'P5' to the Pioneer. This makes not a lot of sense to me, but I did find this: http://support.jp.dell.com/docs/systems/dzuul/rr.htm#5_25_inch_insert

The eject buttons on both drives work fine. When I found this I entered the BIOS and couldn't find anything. It wasn't on the first page to open up

and I thought it might be classed as a boot device and it isn't there either. I cehcked in the device manager anyway, but it didn't seem to be listed.

I looked in disc management just in case, but nothing. I checked the motherboard connections as well.

Is one jumpered at the back for master and the other for slave? And if only one drive is hooked up, does it work?

Try if this applies to your problem. Just be careful when you're in Registry.

I tried that and it worked, then I put the other one back in and... BINGO! Thanks a lot all you guys, it was probably something silly like making a wrong connection, but I probably wouldn't have found it without you.

    Much appreciated, thanks
