  2. They're not crap, they're CMC-MAG, not exactly crap but... Try upgrading your burner's firmware and look-up the recommended media list for your drive. If TDK 8x is not on it, then there's no telling how they'll turn out.

  3. TDK is CRAP.....use anything with TY, MCC or Ricoh media codes.

Anything made by CMC is so close to crap as to be virtually indistinguishable from crap.
Don't look for any help from Fry's. Their policy is to sell you anything you pick up and then haggle with you about a refund later, preferably telling you they will mail you a check. That is, if they can't make you give up first by haggling with you.

That's funny, both HP and TDK-branded CMC MAG E01 works quite well on my PX-716A and DVR-A09XL. Either the original poster got a bad batch or his burner just doesn't have a good write strategy for the discs. CMC is a lot better these days, especially the +Rs.

  7. Well, I changed my HD to another controller and now the tdk will burn.(?)
Im just wondering though what the shelf life may be and if I should take a
chance using it. I picked up some Maxell today at Office Depot made in Japan, for 17.99 for 50. I used a pack of 10 of these I got from Wal Mart a while ago with good results. I think Im going to avoid any media from Taiwan from now on. Any comments on experience with the -R and the +R types? I have never used the -R.

Personally I've had better luck with Taiwan-made +R media (CMC, MCC, RICOH) than with Maxell 8x DVD+R made in Japan. Doesn't seem to be drive specific as none of my burners produce great results with them. You never said what burner you have; that will be useful in recommending media.

TDK media has gone downhill. A few months back I bought 2 (25) spindles for $10.00 each, media code was TTGO2. It produced coasters with all of my dvd burners: PLEXTOR 708A, PIONEER 107D, BENQ 1620's, & LITEON 411S@811S. I'm never buying TDK dvd media again unless they change manufacturers to like MCC.

  11. I had a friend pickup some maxell DVD-R for me yesterday @17.99. Unlike the maxcell +R they are made in Taiwan. I checked these and they are Ritek G05. Any comments on these? (my first burn was a video and a coaster, 2nd burn good for data)

Ritek used to be good, but as far as I am concerned, it's crap now.

The only stuff I'd use is Taiyo-Yuden and Verbatim MCC. It's high-quality and readily available.

Media is so cheap now that IMHO, it's silly to pinch pennies on the cheap stuff.

  13. Ritek G05 works great for me, preferred low-cost brand. I also use TY. MCC is not nearly as good (at least IME) since the move to Taiwan and 16x. That's my opinion though, many have good results with them. Taiyo-Yuden is the one brand that pretty much all agree is excellent, although it is a bit more expensive.
Check the "DVD Media" link to your left vs. your recorder and standalone player and see which media users have had the best luck with.

  14. Didnt find my burner versus media in the lists. I tried a burn using a different software(Nero 6) and it burned OK?? I have been using 1click dvd copy. It seems its not only the burner vs media but also software matters. I have a liteon 812S 8x burner. I just downloaded the latest firmware so will see what happens. Its strange that you can burn a data disk but not a video disk on a particular media.
