  1. I have a Pioneer DVD recorder that has a problem with VHS tapes that are not Master recordings. The video stutters quite a bit. Would a VCR with a Time Base Corrector be a solution to this problem, or should I scrap the Pioneer recorder and get another?

Pioneer recorders are known for their weak stabilization when dealing with tapes. They are known to "black out" or freeze frame when they can't lock onto a signal. So either get a TBC or another recorder (avoid Sharp since they seem to have some Pioneer technology incorporated in their recorders).

  4. Hello I can give you an idea of what to do. I use a Datavideo Time Base corrector once in a while but it sometimes makes the video at the top of the screen flag and sometimes if the tape is bad it will kind of jump so I quit using it as such for now but I have instead use a Panasonic Dmr E55 wich works in many ways better but not always then a Datavideo TBC 1000 and takes away the jumping part and also cures many things like the flagging of the video source and its pass through so you can maybe look for that model or a new one like the DMR Es10 wich has the same line time base corrector built inside it. I promise it will help a lot and it did wonders for me.

The Panasonic does not have a "true" TBC in it, it's just a sync filters. The ES10 ones work well, but the recording quality of those units really sucks copared to others, so I've relegated it to a pass-through box to help filter tapes with bad sync errors. The filters are stronger than what a TBC would do.

  6. LS,
Any idea if those filters are available outside of a questionable recorder? I don't want to buy a Panny, but I think the filters may help with a few tapes I have.

  8. Would something like this help with my problem? Or would I be wasting my time and money?
