While converting a 16:9 avi file to dvd using winAVI, it will appear as 4:3 when played in my dvd player. Now the same 16:9 avi file when converterd in TMPGEnc 3.0 express as a mpg-2 file and authored with TMPGEnc dvd author, plays at 16:9 in my dvd player. Why is this?

Because TMPGEnc is a decent encoder and WinAVI is an all-in-crap-one

I'm not real familiar with WinAVI, but I've read enough here to not touch it with a barge pole. I daresay it must make everything 4:3 unless you specifically tell it to do 16:9 - where/how you tell it to do this, I don't know.
    If in doubt, Google it.

The finished dvd will play at 16:9 on my pc but at only 4:3 in the dvd player. And yes i know winAVI is crap but it saves me 2 hours and TMPGEnc has trouble when i have 2 avi files.

Try the trial version of VSO DivxToDVD. You can set the aspect ratio. And you can add 2 files by holding down the shift key and selecting both.

Theer are two points on a disk that need to have 16:9 flags for maximum compatability. One is set during encoding and carried int he video, the other is set during encoding. Some players (including standalone) need both to switch correctly. Most software players only need the flag in the video. I suspect if you check out the finished disks with IDOEdit or similar, you will find that one of these flags is missing from the WinAVI disk.

PS - DivxtoDVD does not have this problem.
