What are the specifications do you ppls recommend? I see there are some which support divx..is it recommended? Does it mean it can play divx without re-encoding into a dvd file? But how do I play the divx? Just burn it into an iso or file or something? Will it be able to play xvid?

Does having this feature cost more? If so, is it really worth it? What other features should I look out for?

    What are the recommended brands?

    Thanks all!

Yes, it means it can play DivX without re-encoding to DVD. You burn it to a CD-ROM format disc. Most DVD players that support DivX will play Xvid, but some people have reported various problems. It probably depends on what features you use. I don't keep up with Xvid at all, so I can't offer any tips.

Does it cost more? Not really. Is it worth it? I suppose so if you are really interested in DivX. I have little use for the format, but I do have a few DivX discs I can watch on my player. Support for QPel is useful as some players have problems with that feature.

Philips makes some cheap DVD players that seem to have good support for the format.

Was thinking of Pioneer or LG... the Philips locally don't have the divx support yet. Now I'm still thinking... is divx really necessary? I mean is it the way of the future? Will most divx files play on them? What are the probabilities of it not working? And I read that a new divx version 6 is coming out?

There's a DVD Players section to your left <<===.

Tick the boxes with the features you want, and hit search. Browse through the ones that are a) in your price range, and b) available for you to purchase reasonably easily. Read the comments for each player. Once you can narrow it down to a couple, post back 2-5 different ones you're considering, and then people who have those exact players can give you the pros and cons.

Personally I don't know where I'd be without a DivX/XviD-capable player. Great for those hours upon hours of public domain community TV channel series caps, or those home videos of the kids growing up. Basically it's just more bang for the buck time-wise on each DVD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I tried searching for the pioneer model that was available locally...but found none. I've had a look at the LG models...review here is good...but the interface is kinda bare. Would have to rely much on the remote then.

Some questions regading these new type of dvd players...how do we play the divx files? How do we burn them to be precise...

And can we burn on both cd and dvd media discs? Burn as ISO folder? Is there a link/quide/info about this?

I burn mine as data ... to CD or DVD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. If you are looking for a "name brand" and willing to spend about $100:

The Samsung 841 will play divx if you use European Firmware and a simple remote control hack.

    More info: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=544422&page=1&highlight=samsung+745+divx

The Samsung 745/841 also adds upconversion of video signal over component (480p to 1080i) and DVD-Audio/ SACD playback.

It's available online at Amazon and Computers4sure. It used to be available at Costco but I understand that inventories are very low.

I have been very happy with mine so far.

Well I've already ordered the Pioneer one...will post my review and stuff after playing around with it. Hmm one thing though, how do I play subs with the divx together? Now that we don't encode the subs together... what now?
