  1. Recently purchased an external USB DVDRW. The USB cable that came with it is very short and to place the unit in the space I wanted - I need a longer cable. My question is can I just use any USB cable as I have several extras. The only thing - they don't have the small cylinder near the end like the cable that came with the unit. Please advise and I'm a newbie with this stuff. Thanks.

That cylinder on the cable is ferrite for lowering RF (radio frequency) interference. It isn't necessary to have it, so any USB cable will work.

You can also buy a USB extension cable, and still use your original cable with the ferrite and then use the extension cable to make it reach where you need it.
