Is there any way to add chapters to an existing mpg or avi movie? I typically will get these files as mpg or avi or sometimes wmv, and then use FFmpegX to convert the movie into a DVD image (with VIDEO_TS folder). I've heard of people being able to do this but have no idea how to do it. My movies would be so much easier to play if I had chapters (even if they were random at predefined intervals).

    Can anyone help?

Is this feature going to be in a future ffmpegx release? Is there a program that will do this now?

    THANKS!

  2. Toast 6 Titanium can add chapters automatically at 5-minute intervals, and would be your simplest option. Follow the instructions in the ffmpegX opening window (1. Drop file, 2. Select a Target format, 3. Encode). Assuming you want to play this on a stand-alone DVD player on your TV, choose either "DVD mpeg2enc" or "DVD ffmpeg" from the "To" pulldown in the Target format window. You can save time & disk space by clicking the "Tools" tab and unchecking the "Author as DVD (VIDEO_TS)" box before you click the "Encode" button.

Once encoding is finished, open Toast 6 & click the "Video" tab. In the drawer that appears on the left, ensure that "DVD-Video" is selected, along with NTSC or PAL as appropriate. Drag your .mpg(s) into the main window, then click the red button. Toast will automatically add chapters at 5-minute intervals to each .mpg on the DVD.

There are other ways, but this is the simplest I can think of. There's a lot more good information at Galactica's website (http://webpages.charter.net/ernsta/macvideo.html).
