    Hi,

I am looking for a DVD-ROM (not burner) that is perfectly suited for ripping DVD media?

So idealy it should have a high read rate, easy to patch for region free and reliable! Noise and what have you is no issue.

    Thanks!

    Phil

Toshiba 1612 & 1712 if you can find one on ebay. If you want a brand new dvdrom the Liteon's are fast and there are hacked firmwares to make the drive rip faster. Although I am disappointed with Liteon because a pc I built for someone the Liteon drive died within a years time. I've read that the Aopen 1648 dvdrom rips fast as well but unfortunately Newegg.com is out of stock.

If you really want a fast ripper you'd have to get a BENQ 1620 dvd burner that has a patch to make the drive rip at very fast speeds. You can read about it here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=124905

Yep, I'll go with budz on the TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1712,

I have 2 of them, originaly got one for the dvd-rom feature, now i have 2 in diff. pc's and with the speed hacked firmware, i have had them ripping dvd's at over 15X!!! sometimes up to almost 17X!!!
And my 1st one i have had for over 2 years and still smokes and works like the day i bought it!!!!!!
Got my second one off e-bay just acouple of months ago for like $25.00 shipped priority mail!!

I always prefered to use a seperate dvd-rom for ripping as i don't think most burners can really hold up as good to the extra wear and tare..... and why brun out your burner doing it when you can get rom that will be a much better workhorse for such task's, even though burners are so cheap to buy nowaday's 8)

If you want the TOSHIBA 1712 or 1612 you'll have to get it off of EBAY. TOSHIBA no longer manufactures those models. I originally bought a retail 1712 then bought the rest off of EBAY. I have (2) 1712 & (3) 1612. I figure it's a good idea to have backups in case any one of them die.

The new models 1812 & 1912 are now made by another manufacturer for TOSHIBA. Those models can't even compare to the 1612 & 1712.
