This is sort of a take on the movie threads I've seen lately. I'm interested in bands/singers who are fairly successful and are still making music. No dismissals of entire genres please, i.e., "rap sucks" or "country blows". We all know that music is purely subjective, so I'm not looking to bash anyone here. Some of the ones I'm puzzled by:
    1. Dave Mathews Band- these guys have been wildly popular for reasons unknown to me. They have a following that rivals that of the Grateful Dead.
    2. Coldplay- I can see how some might find the actual music appealing, but Mr. Gwyneth's falsetto annoys the crap out of me.
    3. Kanye West- I'll concede that some of his productions are ambitious, but most of them are just unlistenable to me, and I've never seen an artist with less humility. The guy makes a point to voice his displeasure at not winning a silly award, and he even prays as the nominees are being read.

  2. Robbie Williams, a man whose only discernable talent seems to be for eating.

Madonna, a "singer" with the worst voice I have ever heard.

Kyle Minogue, nice arse shame about the rest.

Dido, see Madonna (above). All the charisma of a duck egg.

    etc, etc, etc.

No complaints about the first 4 ... Nickleback are OK-ish ... and 3 doors down are dodgy at best ...

... but Velvet Revolver ? You must be too young to remember Slash in the GNFNR days

Ja Rule is probably my one "success conundrum" ... closely followed by 50 Cent.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Dixie Chicks had some good musical talent. It was the warbling loud-mouthed lead singer that caused all the musical and PR problems. She did have a powerful voice.

Actually I grew up in their more popular days. I was very much into GnR. My proplem with Velver Revolver is that fall to pieces song. I can't stand it! I 100% hate the song. It's weird. I liked GnR, and I love STP, but together I just don't like the sound.

I think maybe it is just Scott Weiland. Is it me or does he just gay up everything? I mean, watch some of their videos.... awful.

Back OT: I would have to agree with whoever said Limp Biskit. What a pile of useless BS packaged and sold to the public as music. I have never a bigger no-talent wannabe than Fred Durst. The best thing Limp Bizkit could do is ditch Fred, change their name, and let Wes Borland take things from there.

"I pack a chainsaw. I'll your ass raw."

    What a pile of shit!!!

Actually I also find Velvet Revolver to be quite... blah. I can promise I'm old enough to remember the GNR days, I just dont like Velvet Revolver much.

Velvet Revolver is nothing special, and in order to really grab everyone given the history it needed to be something special.

I'm with you on Dave Matthews Band. I don't dislike Dave Matthews and I think his music is okay, but I don't know why he's so popular.

I've never bothered to listen to any Dixie Chicks music, but they're another one for me.

LB's last album tanked, so at least people are realizing their music is crap. As for Velvet Revolver, I kinda dig 'em, though they're not as good as they could be. I think Audioslave is a much better hybrid.

  16. The list is endless ...

Any of the "pop" genre bands/singers. Brittany, Aguilera, BSB, etc, etc.

Most of the "so-cal punk" bands like Good Charlotte, Creed, etc, etc. They all sound the same. If ANY of them would gain some sense of uniqueness, it would be a godsend.

Although, I must say that for whatever reason, I raelly enjoy 3 Doors Down lately.

Nothing will compare with Metallica though

I'd like to add Lindsay Lohan to the list. I heard her sing live on the Ellen Degeneres show and she sounded horrific. How she got a record deal, I'll never know. At least at the time she was a pretty hot piece of ass. Nowadays she looks like a lolli-pop.

I can't stand that Kelly Clarkson and song. I don't know how that make a person famous.

The Jamster frog thing was on TV the other day. You can actually call that music? It is the most annoying thing in computer history.

I actually liked this Gorillaz. But working in the store, I had to hear it all the time and it wore on me.

  21. Too many to list.

Just for fun, have you ever looked up "Hansen's Disease"?:

"Leprosy, sometimes known as Hansen's disease, is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, an aerobic, acid fast, rod-shaped mycobacterium. "

I'm a bit surprised by how mainstream she is in the U.S. though...she doesn't fit the mold of a conventional pop artist.

Some stuff, I agree...especially when she was part of The Sugarcubes...but it was their male vocalist that was hardest on my ears.

I'd take Bjork over the Dixie Chicks any time though.
