  1. i have actually been searching quite a bit on the internet for this answer, with, surprisingly, no luck. ok, i know that rambus must be installed in pairs of the same sizes (ie: 2 64MB memory modules installed in RIMM1 & RIMM2 for 128MB), and if no ram is installed in RIMM3 & RIMM4 two "continuity modules" must be installed. here is where i am finding no real concrete answer: if you want to upgrade your rambus, but leave the existing ram in, do you have to install 2 64MB memory modules in RIMM3 & 4 (because that whats in RIMM1 & 2), or can you install 2 128MB memory modules in RIMM3 & 4 (for a total of 384MB in RIMMs 1, 2, 3 & 4)? again i realize that rambus must be installed in matched pairs, but does it have to be installed in matched 4s? thanks for any help

  2. Hi,

you can put 128 pairs in the RIMM3 and RIMM4 but my suggestion would be buy the same kind of memory that is in the M/C already say the same company memory. some time if yu buy some diffrent company memory it does little freezing now and then to the m/c. I have a sony vaio with 64 pair as default. i addes two 128 to the rimm 3 and 4. have no problem so far and reached a speed of twice that of before when i use tempeg or ripping. Gread upgrade. i got the pairs for 78 $ for two 128 from http://www.wintek-intl.com. i bought samsung memory

I have 256 mb rimms in slots 1 and 2, and 128 mb rimms in slots 3 and 4 for a total of 768mb PC800 memory. All 4 are Samsung modules.

You saw a noticeable speed increase in TMPGEnc after adding RAM? Really? I'm surprised because TMPGEnc is mostly processor-dependent. You originally had two sticks of 64mb each right? Or was it two sticks totaling 64mb?

I have a 1gb of DDR RAM, but I've noticed in Task Manager that TMPGEnc only uses about 60mb tops. However, most of us multitask while we use TMPGEnc. As I type, I am running LeechFTP (3 windows open), mIRC (3 windows open), SureThing CD Labeler, FlashFXP, windows explorer, and Internet Explorer. My OS is XP Pro. According to Task Manager, I'm using 214mb of RAM.

My guess is that TMPGEnc was wanting more RAM than your system had available before you upgraded. When you added the extra RAM, TMPGEnc was free to use what it needed. Therefore adding extra memory won't necessarily help those who already have a sufficient amount.

  6. hi,
i used tempeg alone. i had 2 64 stick and to rims. i removed the rims and added two 128 RAM there. so total 384. May be you are right that i may not had free memory. but the thing is this test i did is just with TMPGEnc alone running both the time with 128 MB and 384 MB. so i belive that helped me. but i am not sure about how much memory was free when i had 128 RAM
