I understand that when upgrading from Adobe CS4 to CS5 (or any other upgrade..) it is recommended that that you uninstall the older program before installing the new one.

I am wondering if uninstalling cS4 will delete my old project files, because that would be "no bueno."

It shouldn't but best to back up project files before upgrading.

While it is a good idea to install a major OS upgrade from scratch, I'm not convinced it is worth the effort for an application upgrade. I regularly upgrade applications without uninstalling the previous version.

  3. you can backup your project files to be safe (e.g. on a different HDD)

    cs4 and cs5 can coexist (cs5 requires 64-bit os) , and cs5 can open cs4 project files

if you're in the middle of a big project, the general rule is NEVER to make hardware or software upgrades until you are finished

beware most cs4 3rd party plugins don't work with cs5 (since most are 32-bit and haven't be re-written). So if you've bought a bunch for AE or PP and use them frequently, you might hold off on upgrading for a while

you should make your thread titles a bit more specific because "upgrading" might be hardware, or software. or firmware, or bios etc...

Sorry about the misleading title poison.

"beware most cs4 3rd party plugins don't work with cs5 (since most are 32-bit and haven't be re-written)"
That is an amazing tidbit of information and I appreciate it 10 fold. Seems that I'm going to keep after effects cs4 for a little while...

My main reason for uninstalling in the first place was to free up memory. I save everything to a separate hard drive, but my "c" drive still gets bogged up to hell. Maybe my "c" needs to be defraged or dissected through ccleaner.

You mean drive space not memory.

Where do have your scratch disks (tmp files)? I hope off the c:\ drive. Scratch on C will bog you down quickly. Still if you fill the assigned drive, you will find the program reverts back to C.

Correct. I suppose I'm not sure where to look for the scratch disk files. I assume it is under default.

Under preferences. Everytime you render the timeline, it goes to the scratch disk.

There is no need to remove CS4, I've got CS5 and CS4 (As well as some CS2) suites running happily side by side. As you mentioned AE, when opening your CS4 projects in CS5 they will be opened as untitled projects, and you will resave them as new CS5 projects.

Yes CS5 needs 64bit plugins, but most manufacturers have upgraded or are in the process of doing so, and a lot are offering free updates if the version you have is the latest 32bit, check your plugins sites for more details. All presets etc work fine and transfer across no problem.

You would need dual boot 32 bit and 64 bit to run CS3 or earlier.

Actually thats just a 32bit system, it's not running AE or Prem CS5, but was mainly for photoshop CS5, this wasnt really a good example, hence why it's in brackets, was just to show that as far as software goes the suites can work fine together.

3 machinces are currently running both CS4 and CS5 full suites on 64-bit systems without issue.
