I installed 2000 on a 98 partition as dual boot (fat32) I have problems installing games and virus software on the 2000 boot. This is only with software that is also installed on the 98 boot. I have tried uninstalling the programs on 98 and then installing them in 2000, but it still fails to launch after installing the games. AVG says some file or something is missing or can not be installed. I know dual boot from the same partition is not the best idea, but it what I have to work with. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks

You could create a separate partition with PartitionMagic and still maintain a dual boot system.
The programs that will not work in 2000 are likely based on Dos.
You could also try running a program like DosBox to get the older programs to work. -
Thanks, but I don't have PM and would prefer not to have to reinstall 2000. I don't think these are dos programs. The game is SIMS 2 and AVG only uses dos in 98 at boot. Anyway, it appears that the 2000 istallations somehow detect the versions installed in 98 and fail to install properly in 2000.

I didn't think having both OSes on the same partition was a good idea. Everything I've ever read about dual-booting says you have to at least have the OSes installed on seperate partitions.

Two partitions, both must be primary. Win98 must be in the first partition and formatted as FAT32. Win 2000 can be in second partition and formatted as NTFS. This is the BEST way to do it.
Win98 will not be able to read files on the NTFS partition in this configuration, but you can always save the file to FAT32 partion if you need to have Win98 read it.TANSTAAFL -
I know it isn't the best way, but it is how it is. MS shouldn't have allowed it as an option if it was going to cause a problem. Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this situation without reinstalling 2000? Thanks.

Just to correct Prot.
You can install 98 on 1st or 2nd partition.
winifreid, you will have to re-install W2K......no way around it.
You can use Ranish Partition Manager (free) to create and/or resize partitions. You can also use it to hide/unhide partitions along with creating a boot manager. The boot manager MS creates, sucks.
