  1. I picked up a Pioneer DVR-220S the other day at Walmart (haven't opened the box yet) but I plan to keep it unless some I'm able to find some screaming deal in the next few days (like a 520H for $250).

I just grabbed from Maxell DVD-R 8x ($17.99 for 50) and -RW 2x($20 for 30) from Office Depot tonight (both were on sale, I couldn't care less about the x rating). Do Maxells work pretty well w/the Pioneer? Obviously, I want reliable burns and longevity (nobody really knows on this yet).

All the discs are Made in Taiwan. One of the 15 packs of DVD-RWs has different shade of yellow on top than the other. The DVD-Rs are gold top. I haven't opened them so I couldn't tell you the manufacturer code. Should I keep them?

On a related note, is this guy full of it, or just one person's experiences w/limited testing or would you say his opinions are about right?

All the codes corresponding to real Maxells seemed to do ok.

I have the Pioneer 220 from Walmart as well. My experience with the MAXELL DVD-R 8x speed has not been great using the 220. The 220 gave me a disc error when I tried to use it. Those MAXELL DVD-R 8x were MADE IN JAPAN which burn ok in my computer dvd burners. I wasn't able to use them in the 220. I have used the MAXELL DVD-RW with success in the 220 but I can't remember if they were MADE IN JAPAN or MADE IN TAIWAN discs. MEDIA CODE for the MAXELL DVD-RW that I use is MCC 01RW11n9. I have no problems in using the DVD-RW. I use those in the VIDEO MODE then use my pc to author with TMPGE DVD AUTHOR. I'd return those DVD-R 8x and open up the -RW spindle to check the media code. Office Depot will give you a refund even if the spindle is open. Just tell them they weren't compatible with your recorder.

As for that website I don't believe some of the theories he has posted such as the rings on some discs. I have to with you that his website is based on only his experience. When I first got into dvd burning I posted a question here about rings on my maxell made in japan discs. I had stated that the Plextor tech support told me when the speed of the drive changes the color of the dye will change color resulting in a ring on the disc. The response I got from the owner of that website was that my dvd burner was bad and Plextor tech support doesn't know anything. My Plextor was brand new at the time and is still kicking out great burns by the way. Thus I wouldn't take that website too seriously. It's a great site for some information but I'd rather trust a website like Cdfreaks.com for information on dvd burning. Just my 2 cents on that website.

budz are you sure what rings you are talking exactly about?

If you are relating to a concentratin rings following the disc surface from inside to outer edge you are correct.

I've seen though other type of rings the size of the lazer lense randomly burned on the disc's surface - that are BAD rings!

yes i know what rings i am talking about. as i've mentioned being told the rings were because my plextor dvd burner was bad was totally incorrect. put it this way i would rather believe plextor's tech support than the owner of that website.

  5. Thanks for the info. Hmmm. :/

BTW, regarding the site, I wasn't too concerned about some of the rest of it. I was mainly concerned w/this classificiations of what's 1st class thru garbage by media code and brand. Sounds like I should really take it w/a grain of salt.
