Can anyone please recommend a DVD player that will last more than 6 months and has decent enough compatibility to play various brands of DVD-R and DVD+R? I've searched the forum but every post on compatibility I've found deals with various formats such as Divx,Xvid,etc.. I just want to play my standard DVD-R's without them skipping. My current Daewoo (Cheap but had macrovision hack that I HAD to have at the time but have used only once!!) skips way too often now that it's a few years old. I'm using TY brand DVD-R which have been the best so far, but still skip every now and then. Divx, Xvid, AVI, etc.. support would be great, but not if it only lasts 6 months like the Phillips 642. Thanks in advance!!

The player is available from Amazon (great return policy) for $89.99 last time I checked.
The first player I tried didn't work well but I am very happy with it now. -
No offense....but I have 2 DVP642's. Both are over a year old and one gets used almost daily. Both still work fine....and neither skip.
You have to keep in mind that there are probably thousands of 642's in use...and you are basing your buying decision on the very few people that are having issues.
This is no different than any other piece of hardware. There are always people that like it and people that don't. The people that don't just make their opinions known.
I would suggest getting one and decide for yourself whether it meets you expectations or not. They are for sale in WalMart here in St Louis for $66. Try it for a week and see what you think.Google is your Friend -
Thanks for both replies. I agree that that the few people with issues with the 642 may not reflect the thousands of people that have them. There are other negatives mentioned in reviews also, such as weak remote. I may go out and try one as you say. For the price I can't go all that wrong. Just for comparison sake, are there any other players (or recorder for that matter) that is considered highly compatible with various brands of blank media? I read somewhere that Samsung's were pretty decent.

They also have less that great video quality. My Sony has much better picture quality but it won't play everything. Pioneer makes some that will play almost anything and is much better quality than the Phillips.

The Pioneer DV-373 will play a lot, just not divx. But will play PAL or NTSC and many types off Media. And it has much better video quality than the Phillips 642.

Anyone tried this one: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00078GLJY/ref%3Dnosim/bensbargaicenter/104-5331708-9010305

The Pioneer DV588AS is looking pretty nice. Just curious, but why would a company like Pioneer not state that it is compatible with DVD+R when clearly every review shows that it is? Just wondering. They don't state that it isn't, but only show DVD-R as one of the formats supported.

Your lens is probably dirty by now, esp if you haven't cleaned it for 'a few years'......that makes this happen.
