Less than $500, but to call it a Cinema System is really quite a stretch...

Probably $2100 U.S all told. Before tax. The same setup bought today may be a bit less expensive. I'll be updating my cheap receiver pretty soon though.

EDIT:Shit, I forgot my DVD players and vcrs. Okay that's about 2,500-2,600 then.

Yeah I'd say $500-1000 for the current setup.

I first bought my sony dvp s360 years ago open box for a $100. My digital sony receiver was $200. a $100 for the sub. Then of course hundreds for my growing dvd collection

Over the course of many years (started with just the receiver, no speakers!!! and built up from there) I would have to guess around $3,500

For "home cinema" (which in my book it clearly is not), a little over $500 for my 27" TV, dvd, and vcr. Now for my HiFi (strictly in stereo), about $2500, for which for my "home cinema" I consider a happy coincidence, i.e. I can plug the dvd and vcr audio out into my preamp stage.

My definition of home cinema: 80" minimum viewing screen, high quality projector, THX certified sound system, and dvd player/media center PC. Final cost: more than I'll ever have to spend on such luxury.

I have been into Home Theater (Cinema) for 10 years. My total system runs between $8500.00 - $9,000.00. It is mostly high end equipment and cables. All HDTV (off-air & sat.). Def. Tech speakers (except for B&W's for the surround). Tweaked to perfection and protected with the Monster Reference Power conditioner 3500 MK II. Yes, I never feel like going to the Theater, I typically wait for the movies to arrive on DVD.

Built a cheapo PC (Cele 1000 512 RAM, 120 GIG HD, DVD ROM, ATI with DVI out) around $150. SB Live 5.1 $20, Used Philips XVGA projector $150. Cambridge Sound Works 5.1 speakers on sale for $75. Ubuntu Linux OS - free, White paint on the apartment wall was free also.

If the computers (laptop connected to TV and towers with harddrives) then it is about $2000, but without it's under $500.

I want a projector so bad. You are so lucky to get one for $150.

It's nothing special it just makes the picture large. The quality is good, but not nearly as good as any of the current 27" and main line TVs available today. My JVC 32" that's 2 years old blows the projector away in picture quality, but I'd rather watch a movie that's 60"x60"

Well, I've been into home theater for almost 20 years. Started with a 20" TV, a VCR, and a boom box. Now, I am all Hi-Def at about $6,000 + .

  21. Let's see. I have a CRT projector that cost around $700 (but it blows away a majority of digitals costing $1,000s more) and a DLP projector (X1, about to upgrade it) which originally cost me $1,000. Funny that my $1,000 pj doesn't rival my $700 pj, but it's pretty decent. My CRT puts out a more impressive pic than the cinema simply due to the superb black levels alone.

I also have a 55" CRT HDTV that cost me about $400 (got a deal from my Uncle)

I'm not an audiophile so my Surround Sound system is one of those 130-watt $50 Wal-Mart systems. Very nice for the price though. I bought it as a joke intending to test how crappy it was (and then take it back), but it was more than acceptable. It's actually damn good for the price. I wouldn't mind having a more expensive one, but I'm just too cheap. I'm more of a videophile.

My Home Theater PC cost around $350, but then again I've had to upgrade and buy a new pc a couple times when some parts on my others ones failed, so I have spent probably around a $1,000-$1,200 on HTPCs over the last couple of years.

If DVD media counts then add another $1,500 or so. I have spent over $1,200 just on TV DVD Box Sets.

I've probably spent over $150 on projection screens.

So, it adds up to quite a lot.
