  1. I've downloaded a TV series in avi format. Only I can't get it to play in Windows Media Player, or WinAmp or Nero Showtime. Furthermore I can't convert it in TMPGenc or WinAVI. Having scouted about a few forums when a similiar problem cropped up, someone asked to load it into VirtualDub and print the file info.... so here is mine...

what i want to do is to burn the avi onto a VCD.

    All help gratefully appreciated.

    Cheers

If you can open it in VDub, just frameserve it to TMPGEnc and encode away using the VCD template.

Have you got the DivX 5 Codec installed ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. Right then.. this is a problem!

I haven't got a clue what you mean by "frameserving" to TMPGenc" - could you elucidate?

In the meantime, when loading it to VirtualDub I got the following screens:

Once I'd got it into VirtualDub I tried (just for the hell of it, as I don't really understand what I'm doing) to Save Old Format Avi, which started well and then ground to a halt after a few seconds, with this screen

In the meantime, I downloaded the latest DivX pack from their site and it still won't play in Windows Media Player or their DivX player. When I went back to try and save it again in VirtualDub as an Old Format AVI it once again started, but then went nowhere... this time I didn't even get the crash notice - the fps just went to zero and the time remaining just went up and up til I stopped the whole thing.

    Again, all advice much appreciated.

    Cheers
    Steve

    I don't have to - Read here.

    - But in all honesty, your AVI sounds really messed up - Not to mention that nasty VBR mp3 audio, that nothing likes. Next time you create an AVI, don't use VBR audio!

  6. It does, doesn't it? lol I think I may have to get it from somewhere else. Pain in the ass, as I've been downloading an entire series in one go - 4.1Gb and really don't want to have to do it again!

Tried frame serving and where the screen comes up saying "Frame Clients Installed: AVIFile Only" mine says "Frame Clients Installed: None" and it's not going anywhere!

I really appreciate your help here. Should I give up and get the AVI from somewhere else?

EDIT - I didn't make the AVIs - I downloaded them from an unknown source.

Ah - Those Unknows Sources are always hard to deal with...
Try running the troublesome AVI thru VirtualDub MP3 Freeze and scan for bad frames!

  8. Ta. I'm going to bed now - given up for today. In the meantime, I realised I needed to add in the AVI client thing into VirtualGub, which I did. However, the frame serve (which now says the AVIfile frame client is present) is doing nothing - the box is up but nothing is moving.

No, nothing moves, until you open an encoder (Like TMPGEnc) and start encoding from the frameserver. It just waits there, for someone coming around start asking for frames.
