And it most certainly was NOT free

It didn't come with a lot from the box, just a USB cable, the earbuds, and the wall charger. I thought it would come with a dock but I had to buy that separate. I also got the combo FireWire and USB cable for on the go. I may get the FireWire cable for the photo dock I got and leave the USB one with the charger.

I haven't had much time to play with it, I've only had it for a week. I'd like to use the calendar function on it but I don't have the Mac anymore at home for iSynch or whatever it is that works with it. I think I read Outlook works for it as well but I'll never touch Outlook again. Anyone know if the Mozilla calendar works with it? I know the iPod isn't really a PDA but it gets synched at home every day. It would just be a handy feature on the go. I think I've pretty much got a handle on iTunes so far. Mostly I wanted an iPod for its storage purposes.

However I will need a case for it since it is already getting some little scratches in it. Anyone have any recommendations on a good case for it? I don't know yet if I want a silicone one or a leather one. Probably a good leather one just to obscure it a little.

    Welcome to the iPod family.

I think it's crap that Apple stopped supplying the docks on the top models. I bought my 40Gb back in January and it came with a dock, both firewire/USB cables, earbuds and software. Then about a month later they stopped handing the docks out.

I have no clue on the calendar feature as I don't use it. Sorry!

And as for a case, I'd just go with a silicone one for occasional use. I take mine to work and when it's at home it sits on the dock. However, if you use it in a little bit of a rougher way, I'd recomment a case with a screen cover. The plastic does scrape easily.

I bought my cheap silicone case off of ebay for $5 bucks, haven't had a single problem with it.

  3. it can synch with outlook, but i wouldnt advise using it as a calendar. i loaded a calendar with repeating appointments and the thing goes off all the time still, even though i completely all calendar entries. it starts beeping like hell at 9pm nearly every night and i cant stop the thing from doing it.

just use it for what is good for, music and file storage.

if your looking for something new try podslurping. its a little app you can store on a the hdd, when you plug it into a pc and run it, it copies all docuemnts off the local hard drive, good for espionage.

You can disable event notifications from the Calendar in the settings, or set it to silent alert. Outlook is right out though, I'll never allow that program to remain on any Windows PC I ever own.

I picked up a simple leather case for mine yesterday and am really satisfied with it. The 60GB iPod Photo is a little fatter than the previous version so it wouldn't fit in the silicone one I tried very well. The leather one I got had was customized for that particular model so it fits like a leather glove.

I am a little jealous of my friend who just got an iPod Mini though. IMO the Shuffle is just too small, both in physical size and in storage size. The Mini is just perfect for a portable MP3 player so she can take hers when we go to work out and use the armband for it whereas mine is a little too bulky for that and having it on your hip isn't as convenient. But then I did buy mine more for the storage use than the convenient size of the Mini. Oh and that brushed aluminum case is so nice.

OK I figured out how to "synch" Sunbird calendars to the iPod. For those that don't know Sunbird is the standalone version of the calendar portion of the Mozilla Suite, similar to Thunderbird and Firefox. Open up the Options dialog and select the Publishing option. In the only field available there for a location to publish to enter in the path to your iPod's calendar folder.

    For example:
file:///Drive letter of your iPod:/Calendars/name of your calendar file.ics

Obviously replace the bold text with what it is describing

I use the ipod at work/home (nice to know I always have a backup of every music file & cd I own on there, on the computer and on DVD's).

I have a shuffle for working out, those things are great! I got mine used, so it was about half price. I like it.
