I recently recorded some AVI files with a still camera for a friend, and want to edit some footage out of them. Unfortunately, none of the editors I load seem to want a bar of it. They are all 30 FPS MJPG, H.26 video with 8 bit mono audio, according to the programs I have managed to load them in. All I really want to do is cut bits off the start and end.

  2. What I have done with problem Video files like this ,is load them into VirtualDubMod and save out as Uncompressed AVI and use them in my NLE. Other time I have also had to use quicktime.

Most camera files are MJPEG in either a Quicktime or avi wrapper.

AVI versions often work in WMP and Moviemaker.

Codecs are often loaded with the supplied apps. My Canon came with a limited editing app.

not for all cameras (not even built in i think anyway**) -- you often have to install of the various mjpeg codecs around ...

also then - you can use said mjpeg also in yoru fav NLE

** i tried a sample of various mjpeg files and only one opened (may of been mpeg1 anyway) untill i have a mjpeg codec installed ..

I seem to have worked it out with Windows Movie Maker, which will do as a stopgap solution for now. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

Well MJPEG, should be MJPEG. Probably just a bunch of different non standard FourCC's.

ffdshow also supports MJPEG decoding. Both dshow and VfW.
