  1. imtrying really hard to convert avis and mpegs to watchable dvd or vcds, mostly vcd. i started with toast 6, but got messages about quicktime missing software. i searched this site and found toast uses quicktime to encode. i cant find anyway to change this to vlc (would this make any difference anyway?).

i dont have a clue what most of this technical jargon means, but ive downloaded something called ffusion component, which is a codec(?). this has made me able to open avis with quicktime which i couldnt before. does this mean the problem is solved?

ive also got d-vision which is an encoder and im trying to work out how to use it to convert avis to 'dx50'. what is this? will toast burn files converted to this code as vcds?

would be gratful for some simple explanations

Toast uses QuickTime to decode (read) movie files. You cannot set another decoder.

FFusion is from 2003, apparently not under active development. If it works for you, great! But a lot of users here use a different set of decoders: DivX and 3ivX. This set should help QuickTime play most modern mpeg-4 based AVIs (except for H.264), and should be enough.
'dx50' is the fourcc code for DivX version 5. But your movies don't need to be in this format to work. Also, encoding a movie twice will lower the quality needlessly.
