  1. I'd like to rip LOTR extended to my HDD so I can watch it through Media Center. But I'd like to edit the IFO files or whatever is necessary so that when disc 1 ends, disc 2 automattically begins. What I'm going to do is rip them w/ Dvd Decrypter, then pull up the files in Shrink so I ONLY have the DTS audio track, and then I'd like to join them. I'm assuming I'll need to use some program like IFOedit, which I have no experience using. How do you figure out which files to edit. If anyone can offer any guidance on this I'd appreciate it.

DVD Shrink in re-author mode is designed to do this. Add part 1 then part 2,be sure you select the same audio stream for both.

  3. I appreciate your reply, but I don't think you understand what I want to accomplish. When I go to play the movie from Media Center, I don't ever want to be prompted to "insert disk 2" or whatever. I just want whatever chapter ends disc 1 to flow right into whatever starts disc 2. How could I do that w/ DVD shrink if parts 1 & 2 are on separate physical discs?

How can parts 1 + 2 be on seperate physical discs if you have joined them with DVDshrink?

Am I correct in thinking that you want to store parts 1+2 on your HDD to watch as one continuous movie ?

If so then all you need to do is as wulf109 explained, then backup to your hard drive as a VIDEO_TS folder.

You can then watch it as one complete movie because it will merge the 2 movies together !

Just rip the main movie title from disc 1 and disc 2 to your hard drive, then with DVDshrink in re-author mode, import part 1 and part 2 and backup.

You say you want to rip them to your HD. DVD Shrink in re-author mode will create a directory with both parts.

  6. but won't the 2 separate disc have vobs/ifo/ etc will the same file names? If that's the case then what you guys are describing won't work because disc 1's files will be replaced by disc 2's.

  7. No, DVDshrink will rename the files appropriately.

For an easy guide have a look at http://www.dvdshrink.info/reauthor_basic.php (not exactly what you want but close enough to figure it out)

    1. How do you play merged movies continuously from the hardrive? Perhaps the proper question is how do you merge two movies to play continuously from the harddrive? The answer may help me solve my problem in # 2.

    2. I have used DVDShrink many times and made some DVDs with track selections of live concerts. But there is a noticeable pause between chapters. I cannot even use the "Next" button in my Sony player. I guess I am doing it wrong. Thanks.

wulf109 told you the proper way to do it,extract dvd 1 to your hard drive and then put dvd2 into your dvd burner and then open dvdshrink and choose reauthor and browse to the dvd1 folder and drag the titleset over to the left, then browse to dvd2 and drag the titleset to the left, then backup.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

  12. The pause between tracks is slight and there will be only one so don't worry about it. I did exactly as you are describing with the extended trilogy. Save in a folder with the desired audio tracks and set to NO compression since you are not burning to disc.

Methinks those who are questioning the suggested method should actually try it instead of just debating whether it would work, as those who suggested it (and others who have done it before) know that it actually does work

If you wanted to get your hands dirty, you could try the method suggested at http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/test.htm . Basically just rip the main movie VOBs from each disc, rename them to suit VOBEdit's naming convention, then join them. Then use IFOEdit to recreate the VOBs and you'll get all the chapter points retained, and one continuously-playing Main Movie on your hard drive.

If you want to save a bit of space, you could always use Stream Processing in either DVDDecrypter or Smartripper as you rip to get rid of unwanted audio, etc, to fully customise the DVD and only use as much space as absolutely necessary.
    If in doubt, Google it.
