  1. JVC vcr model 3911U. When I hit the tv/vcr switch on the remote it will not switchover, nor do the menu or program switches. but all of the other buttons work. If it is in play mode it won't switch over to video. Took the remote apart and it was pristine inside. This VCR, main menu screen is acessed from the remote, not available on the VCR. The TV/VCR switch is on the (VCR)remote and not on the VCR itself. The VCR itself has very limited buttons, most everything is on the remote. I had a tape refuse to eject and so had to put some force on the tape to pull it out. I noticed the tape was stuck on something within the unit but was able to pull it out without a problem.

Remotes use infra red which the human eye cannot see but a video camera can. Assuming you have, or can borrow, a camcorder, look at the front of the remote through the camcorder viewfinder and press a button on the remote. You will be able to see the flashes of infra red light if it is working and nothing if it isn't. You'll probably find that not all of the buttons are doing anything. I use this method to check remotes for dead batteries, faulty switches, etc. You can also use it to check the IRDA ports on a laptop.

  3. It should automatically go to video when it starts to play, if it doesn't it has something wrong with it. Try unplugging it and plugging it back in.

  4. That was a great suggestion of the using a camcorder to see the infrared light on the remote. All the buttons are working just fine. Also tried turning off the unit, but that did not work. So any other suggestions?

Can you put another tape in ?
    If so, what happens ?

  6. If I put another tape in, I can play it, but there is no video or sound. Normally when you put a tape in, you can see the TV automatically switch over to Video, but now it does not. Before, if I wanted to watch the VCR and switch back to the TV, I would hit the TV/Video on the remote to move back and forth, but now nothing happens.

You may have turned the unit off, but did you disconnect it fully from the power or just use the front panel button? To do a full reset on most equipment, you have to unplug it from mains power, leave it for a few seconds and then plug it back in.

Does this problem happen on BOTH the RF and the AV outs?

  9. I unpluged the unit from the wall, thanks, but that one is what I instinctually think of, when having a problem, such the Direct TV box, its like it clears out faulty memory.
Now, AV and RF, I am not sure about. I have tried switching all the plugs in the back of the unit to different areas to see if there is any effect, but, to no avail.

  10. I have the exact same problem with my JVC VCR H5900. Did you ever solve it?

I used to have it attached to a digital TV through the S-Video connection. Now it is going to a TV that only accepts RF. Can't get any output from the VCR whatsoever.

Tried the remote from my other JVC VCR and still couldn't get it to switch to video. So, it is definitely something with the VCR, not the remote.
