I'm using PPRO 1.0 and exporting with the Adobe MPEG Encoder to DVD compliant files (m2v and wav). Can anyone tell me how to select Closed GOPs? What is the default; open or closed? I have the MainConcept standalone encoder and can choose to use open or closed with it but cannot find the same choice in the Adobe MPEG Encoder.

Also, how can you tell if video has open or closed GOPs if you didn't encode it yourself.

I appreciate any help. Thank you.

This is a good question. Lately I have been exporting MPEG files from in my case Adobe Premiere Elements and was experimenting with variuos authoring programs. DVD-lab says that some of the exported files have open GOPs. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm not sure how to close all GOPs in Adobe's mpeg encoder, it may not have that feature. Really its not necessary and pointless to use unless you are encoding for multi-angle footage or possibly if you needed to do alot of post editing of the mpg. Closing GOPs lowers quality because your frames can only reference other frames within that same GOP.

The default setting in any mpeg encoder should be open gops, but gops will still be closed at scene changes.

If you want to check whether your file has open or closed GOPs you can use BitrateViewer. I know the full version shows this information and I think the trial version does too. Other than that you should assume your mpegs will have a mixture of open and closed gops.

Open GOPs are a good thing.
