    Is it illegal to download MP3s of songs I already own (like on vinyl records, cassette tapes, etc.)? I would hate to find out my entire record collection is useless without a record player.

    Probably illegal to d/l mp3 even if you own them in a different file format. Morally, I would say acceptable.

    I see you are in the US so the answer is no. This was expressly ruled on in RIAA vs Napster. Besides a recording released on vinyl is a completely different product than that same recording released on CD.

    You are allowed to format-shift, though. I have a bunch of cassette singles that I put on disc since they're unavailable digitally (old school remixes and the sort).

    Just get a decent turntable and plug it in to your sound card (with an adapter).
