  1. I have a series of mpeg2 video files I recorded through my ATI TV Wonder Pro svideo/audio input and the audio has a pretty definite buzz. What is the best method to remove this? I have VideoStudio 6 and 7, but I find no audio filters (I could easily be missing it), TMPGEnc, VirtualDubMod and VirtualDubMpeg. VirtualDub has some sort of audio filtering, but I was unable to figure it out. Please help.

You might give Audacity a try. It's freeware and has some decent filters. If you need a full audio editor, Goldwave or Adobe Audition, though the later is pretty expensive for casual use.

  3. I downloaded Audacity, and tried to load my mpg(2) file but it does not appear to load it correctly. Do I need to extract the audio as a wav or mp3, then edit it and then resync, possibly with tmpgenc?

  4. someone has to have a method. I wanted to use Audacity, but it only takes .wav and .mp3 (or aif and au files, but i am not familiar with these). Is there a way to extract the audio as an mp3, process with audacity, then demultiplex back to the original video?

Yes, you can extract the audio as a .WAV with VirtualDub Mod. Just go to Streams, Stream list and Save WAV. Then after processing in Audacity, export as WAV. You can then encode the processed WAV to MP2 again with TMPGEnc or convert it to AC3 With BeSweet or other encoders. Finally mux the audio and video back together with a program like TMPGEnc.

There's probably easier ways, but I work more with AVIs that use MP3 audio that Audacity accepts directly and usually mux it back into the video with VirtualDub.

  6. OK, Audacity is powerful. I isolated a segment of the 'buzz' and removed it. Great. However, it resulted in audio with a raspy, high pitched crackle. The problem is, it is only audible during dialog or some music. I can never isolate it to use Audacity's noise removal. So, how can I remove this sound. Any ideas?

Sorry, I don't understand Audicity's filters that well. I have noticed on high levels of filtering the problem you mentioned. I'm not sure of a good answer. I guess for free, it does well. Lower levels of filtering have worked for me, albeit with some remaining noise. I'm sure there are better programs out there, but for a price.$$

You could try the trial of Adobe Audition.

To me, it's a miracle Audacity works at all with noise. Still, it is encouraging that a program like that can do some good.

I think Goldwave has a 30 day trial. It is small and easy. A great audio editor for the dough. Might have some better filters than Audacity (which I like a lot, but might not be the right app for this problem).

  9. the 60Hz buzz cycle is a bitch to get rid of without effecting the other bands of audio data.

a fliter basicly kills the frequency response between a certian range of wavelengths.. so if the buzz of sixty hertz coincides with a sound effect that is in the same range, bith sounds get chopped..

now, that is a little on the less complicated side of whats going on.. but it is in effect, what is happening.

dont mess with poor Video fodder... life is to short to re-sync videos and remove hums.
