  1. Please help. I try ripping a DVD for the first time.
    Here is what I got:

    a) Athlon 1.2G + 256MB RAM, running Windows 2000 Pro
    b) 12X DVD-ROM (UDMA-33) (just bought yesterday, don't know what the manufacturer is but the box says 12X MAX, the manual does not even mention the manufacturer name)
    c) 90GB hard disk, UDMA-66 (30GB master, 60GB slave for video capture)
    d) 4X4X32 CD-RW
    e) DVDrip software package as recommended by Sefy's method.

Yesterday, I used the Sefy method in this forum to rip my 'Pretty Woman' DVD and here are some problems:

    1) it took about 45 minutes to rip DVD to VOB files. I understand that it should be much faster than that. SmartRipper says the ripping speed is 1.3X ! I expect a higher number like 5 or 6X here.

2)After ripping is complete (VOB files are all in my 60GB drive), I ran DVD2AVI as the next step. I followed the instruction in this forum and when I click on Save AVI, all I got is a 'DING(from the speaker)' and nothing happens. However I saw a file PrettyWoman.avi.01 (SOMETHING LIKE THAT) on my 60GB drive with file size of 0. What's going on here ? I should have an D2V and a audio file, right ?
By the way, when I select 'save AVI as the method says, DVD2AVI only let me save as .AVI file, not as .D2V file. I am very puzzled.

    Can someone helps (Sefy, please)

    Thank you

  2. I am answering real quick as I do not have a lot of time, but I believe that you are "Saving .AVI" .... where as you should be "Saving Project"

Do this... rip DVD (clean it and see if your 1.3x raises to 4 or 5x) then open dvd2avi and press OPEN and open the first VOB. Press OK

next press SAVE PROJECT and name what you wish to call the d2v file and audio file...and where you wish to save it... next press save and you should see the d2v file and audio file appear in your folder. (Note: if no audio file shows up.. you may need to change track numbers, but this is rare)

    Hope this helped!!!

  3. trixiedivx is right...but also if you're wondering on how to increase your ripping speed, check out some of the other posts in dvd ripping forum...i believe there was a long post dealing w/ how "dvd ripping not what it seems to be" or something like that...i guess there were numerous suggestions on how to increase ripping speed

  4. thanks for the answers. Yes, I click on Save AVI (the Sefy method said Save Project, I was so excited that I can read well !!!). So, that's my mistake

Regarding ripping speed, I learn from this forum about the VIA chipset 4 in 1 drivers. I downloaded and will give it a try this evening (The VOB files are still there).

Actually, I had that VIA driver and it cause my HP CD-RW not able to write (Nero refuse to write). After I remove the driver, the Nero burn CD fine again.

By the way, is there any way to really test the thruput speed of a DVD-ROM drive ?

    Many, many thanks

I am also using the VIA 4in1 drivers. I have no problem at all with my CD-RW. I have read on the VIA website that some bios releases did not enable a second slave correctly. I solved this with flashing my bios. (but I will not recommend to do this, unless there is a serious bug in your bios release)

  6. OK, I installed the upgraded VIA driver and the results are stunning: (for a two hour movie)
    1) rip VOB to hard drive takes about 5min30sec
    2) DVD2AVI about same (5 min 15sec)

I saw the rip speed starting at 3.6X then go up to 9.8X max (my DVD-ROM is 12X, UDMA-33).

Also, for some obscure reasons, Nero still burn VCD with this new driver (it did not a few days ago with upgraded driver SW, may not be the latest though)..

Many thanks to all who contributed the answers to my problems.

It's now the right time to backup my system hard drive.
