  1. This doesn't apply to 'printable surface' discs, but the normal kind when you put a cd label on them

I always put labels on my DVD-/+R's. I just find 'datamax dvd-r gray top x4' label and 'bewitched season 4 disc 3' written on in pen.... Yuk thats just SOOO tacky. I like a proper design.

But to get to the point, other people moan about them saying it makes so they 'can't be copied' .. just wondering what other peoples exprience of this is.. I think ive had that happen once.....
DVD region settings are a joke, I can't believe how stupid people are falling for it

  2. so they 'can't be copied'
    I have never heard this.

  3. There's been alot of discussion on this in the past, there's a huge thread on DVD labels here. Most people here have come to the conclusion that labels are not worth the trouble they cause in creating discs that skip and freeze, as well as being unable to properly 'copy' or backup a disc, as you mention.

I've never used them personally, I've read enough bad experiences to not bother trying them.

  4. I used to use labels on CD-Rs with largely no problems, but they have been known to peel away in a DVD players or CD Rom drives if they get too warm.

As I understand it, labels on DVDs are not to be recommended as they unbalance the DVD itself. From the caution that I have read on this site, I don't think that I would chance trying a label on a DVD.

Your alternatives are buy printable discs or buy the DVD.

  7. I have a TDK CD/DVD printer which will print onto any CD/DVD with a plain space of about 1 x 2.5 inches.

Has no effect on the playback of the DVD.

  8. That's a nice feature to have Cole, do you have the model number or any links to that or similar printers? I don't really care that I don't have pretty graphics on my discs, but my handwriting sucks and a printer like yours would be nice.

It probably throws it off-balance and causes read errors, aborting the copy process

  15. Hub labels are a viable alternative. They don't seem to cause the problems full-face labels do.

  16. Thanks for the links (I apologize if I've gotten too far away from your original topic Jumbo Holden). I now remember having seen the Primera and the Casio before, they don't seem too common though. Only thing about these printers I'd see being a headache, trying to get them to print the text in the right spot when you've got the disc's brand text and graphics on the disc.

Do you have control over where the text is printed with yours Cole? Or would it be too difficult to control where the text is printed with alot of 'branded' discs? Most of the discs I buy have text or graphics on half the disc

FWIW, I use my Canon i865 to print either downloaded images or my own creations direct to printable discs. The whole labels and playback/copying debate has been done to death IMO ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

  18. You know I don't know if Im the only one with good results but I put meritline labels on over 1000 discs and I have never had one bad disc that wouldn't play or had problems becuase of being unbalanced. The only problems I have had is using bad media that causes skipping. I don't know why so many people say their discs are unbalanced with labels. Are you sure it's not bad media or a bad player????

Many people have had discs that skipped and froze, etc. when they had labels on them. After they removed the labels the discs would play perfectly. So it's clearly the labels creating the problems.

Staples sells the Casio thermal disc printer (b&w text only). If I remember it is like $70, though that might have been on sale.

Not all the labels are created equal but they do change the way weight is distributed on the disc. (8x speed is min. 4600 rpm with 16x going about 9120-25600 rpm). At these speeds you don't need much to make disc wobble like crazy. Even though playback at 1x may sound like nothing in comparison (570 - 1600) it has enough speed to allow centrivical forces to amplify weight irregularities thus creating imbalance (wobble). That was covered in elementary school, wasn't it?

Had a lot more trouble with the issue lately. it really does depend on the brand of disc and the drive your ripping with tho

  23. I personally never had problem with labels. The important is to center it and labels with small hole is difficult to center Precisely. this is a must. I made a jig to sit on stomper to accurately and exactly center the label. I use hi gloss label it is beautiful sometimes look better than a commercial print when I design it myself well it is a picture on glossy paper. There is a trade off in everything an average dvd cost 40 cents if screwed up. And can always remove the label and reapply. The beauty outweighs the possibility of freezing! Centering Centering Centering .. I haven't seen a label come off yet , cd or dvd's should be sujected to heat to make the label come off and lazer heat is not that much.

  25. Sorry for typing boo boo, I meant " DVD or cd's should Not be subject to heat to warp or expand .. meaning leaving it on or near heat source , under sun or left in the car. heat from laser is not that much. I could never find a thin glossy label like they put on some jars otherwise they would be very nice. If it is centered Precisely the added weight will add flywheel effect inertia and will spin more stable (ly).

The Primera Signature Z1 printer http://ioproducts.com/primsigz1the.html is a very nice little thermal printer. It prints in four areas on the disc by rotating it after it prints each area.

Why not just avoid the situation altogether by not dvd labels on any DVD-/+R/RW?

It's been documented extensively that this causes problems. Putting stick on labels is sort of like masteurbating with a cheese grater: slightly amusing, mostly painful, and in the end, no satisfaction whatsoever and a messed up unit.

We don't simply make this shit up. (not all of it at least... still skeptical about CMC media and that whole JFK thing...)

I believe it's the combination PLAYER / DISC
When I burn DVD's I don't have problems to play them on my PC, my daughter's PC or my standalone DVD player.
After putting a label, most DVD's are not recognised by my PC DVD-recorder although there are no problem on my daughters PC and my standalone DVD player.
So I think some DVD-reader/writers are more sensitive for labels than others.
