I have some 624x352 (1.77:1) avi (DivX) files burned to CD-R (as data). When played on my stand-alone DivX player on a widescreen TV they have black bars on the top and bottom.

Can someone tell me what do I need to do so these fill the entire screen? Obviously there's gonna be re-encoding involved. I don't mind a bit of effort, but I t want to lose as little quality as possible.

    Thanks.

Only true 16:9 ratio will just fill the 16:9 screen on a widescreen tv. There are many other movie ratios. Some more squarish, others more retangular or panoramic. Unless they are DITORTED
(streched or squashed) or cropped to fit the 16:9 TV screen ratio, you will see these bars. Actually I really hate when people with 19:9 TVs purposely Fill" the screen with a regular 4:3 broadcast so everyone looks as if they puto on 30 pounds. In this situation you should see black bars to the right and left What's wrong with that anyway? At least there is not distortion. I do not mind the bars at all but that's just me.

  4. some movies are in 2.25-1 aspect ratio which will still give black bars on a widescreen tv. This is easily cured by using zoom or letterbox to distort the picture so it "fills" the screen..In the end you have to adjust your player and Tv display to get the Best ratio that you like.. personally when I see a planet in a film, I prefer to see a circle rather than an Egg

As mentioned in the first post they are all 1.77:1. 16:9 translates to 1.78:1 so in theory it should fill the entire screen with no (or very tiny) black bars.

I've been using 'zoom' but it's not as appealing as having it work the 'right' way.
