  1. TMPG announces that the "new" Tsunami mpeg dvd author will hit retail shelves in February for $50. I can't figure out if this is a new product based on the current tmpg dvd author, or if it is something "new" for retail ?
Anyone have any information on what we can expect ?

  2. I'm really confused now.
What does it differ from Tmpgenc DVD Author?

  3. I guess it's a TMPGEnc DVD Author upgrade, with a percentage of profits going to a Tsunami charity fund.

  5. I just received a reply from their support department that said this product is not all that different from 1.6, it is being made to start a retail identity in the U.S.

Unlikley. After all TmpGenc is short for "Tsunami Mpg Encoder"

The article says "TMPG joins the international community at large in support for the victims of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. To show our support, for each TSUNAMI MPEG DVD AUTHOR purchased through the retail channel, TMPG will make a donation to the relief and rebuilding efforts in the affected areas in South Asia."

  9. thats awesome.

not to start a debate or anything, but dont you think that maybe they'd want to be a little more PC and not name it tsunami? just a thought. I wouldn't care, but I'm not a business man.

They have been using that name for years, it has a lot of recognition and momentum in the digital video community making it difficult to change I would have thought.

  12. I purchased a copy from ecost for $45 shipped. If it really has the AC-3 encoder built in than this is a HOT deal ! I will report soon.

  13. Ok...I received my copy of TSUNAMI DVD AUTHOR and I can report that it is exactly the same as the downloadable TMPGENC dvd author except that the AC3 encoder is built in !!! The program shows as being version 1.6.32.86 which is slightly newer than the downloadable version. I bought is for $45 shipped from ecost.com . I understand that this just an introductory price to get a foot hold on retail shelves.

Thanks for telling us, I just ordered mine

I loved using the tmpenc dvd author before but I really didnt want to spend that much for it plus that ac3 plugin. I hope this turns out to be a good bargin($45.02 vs $97).

One quick question for those who have bought this. Does the built in AC-3 encoder require the "registration check" that the add-in TMPG AC-3 encoder does? I use a PC dedicated to video/audio work and do not have (or intend to add) an internet connection to it.

  16. I don't see any mention of the periodic registration requirement in this boxed version.

Does anyone know of any walk-in retail stores which have it in stock: BestBuy, Circuit City, CompUSA?

I just tried the trial version and get the following error message when attempting to add a .mpg file:

    External Exception C000001D

If I try again I get the following error:

    Could Not Initialize Decoder

I know some of the files I tried were made from CCE and others I believe were from TMPGENC.

Does anyone have an idea what's wrong?

    Yes, MPEG2's.

Interesting, I just downloaded and tried the regular download version (1.6.26.73) and it worked fine.

Must be some bug in the retail version (1.6.33.87).

Would like to buy it if I could try it.

I can't find it for $45 -- was there a coupon code or something to get it to under $50??

  24. www.jr.com also has it.

    It's $39.88 + s&h after the dreaded mail-in rebate.

  26. Additional information on the retail boxed "Tsunami dvd author" . The Dolby digital AC-3 encoder/decoder is built in with no registration check. HOWEVER, you can't use this decoder on any other TMPGenc products like you can when you pay the extra $29 for the add on encoder. So...if you want the encoder for tmpgenc express 3.0 for example, you will have to pay extra for the encoder.
