This is an interesting story. It appears a few people want to change the current film marketing business model so that theater releases "coincide" with a film's release on DVD and on cable channels:

I always thought theater releases should be run as pay per view.

What I think the studios should do is release the DVD of the movie *the month* that it is taken from the theatres. They should put the DVD together when the film is in the theatres, then release it right away. I hate waiting to get a movie that I like on DVD for 6 months after it has been taken out of theatres
