a friend of mine had a pacific digital usb 2.0 external dvd burner (8x toshiba dvd-r/+r).. he wanted me to pull the drive from the enclosure and put it in his pc.. in exchange he said i could have the enclosure.. removing the drive & installing it internally went just fine.

now i have an external enclosure and the fun begins.. i've got a benq 1620 dvd burner that i wanted to use in it.. the problem is when i put the drive in windows will detect a "usb mass storage device", but not the drive, and the "usb mass storage device" gets a little yellow excalamation point (or question mark, cant remember which) when i attempt to use the benq in the enclosure.. so i removed it and tried an old AOpen 32x cd-rom.. it worked fine.. tried an old seagate 20gb hard drive, worked fine..

i've tried using various different firmwares, from the bulk/oem to the official, setting the jump on master, slave & cable select.. windows just wont correctly detect it.. it always puts the little yellow excalamation point next to "use mass storage device", and gives "error code 10" inside the properties for it..

i'm using windows xp pro w/ sp2 (hotfixes up to date), amd athlon 2600+, 1gb ddr ram.. i tried it on another PC (windows xp w/ sp2).

am i just screwed, or is there a way to get this working?

i've re-installed the drive internally in to my PC and it works just fine, so i havent screwed up the drive.. just not able to get it working in the enclosure.

    any idea's?

Just a thought - perhaps WinAspi is necessary in this case ?

i already have aspi intalled.. not sure about "winaspi" though.. i installed aspi with forcesaspi... is there a difference between forceaspi & winaspi that would cause a dvd burner not to detect, but would allow a cd-rom to detect in an external enclosure?

  4. Could be the benq is jumped as a slave. AFAIK- external's should be jumpered as master.

sorry- already tried that. check again?

Frustrating for you cause it should work.

I would say the problem is with the burner not the usb box.

It works with reg cd and hard drive so you know it works

I/family got this eror with external box that had a bad hard drive in it. I knew the box was ok because it showed ok in one place in device manager but had another entry with exclamation mark indicating that it could not reconize the device inside the box.

I don't know a fix to make it reconize the burner as mostly they do not require special drivers. But you own playing tells you the box works.

i'm thinking it has to just be an incompatibility with the burner.. i just tried a lite-on 163d dvd-rom and it worked fine..

i guess i've done all i can do.. i figured changing the firmware from official (id string = benq 1620) to the bulk/oem firmware (id string = atapi dvd-rw) would work.. but i guess not.. i'll be order a pioneer dvr-109 soon. hopefully that will work in it.. i'm ordering the one with the black bezel, its a few dollars cheaper and it will match the enclosure..
