  1. I'm somewhat new to backing up DVDs and so far I've only done about 30 with no problems, until recently. The other day I tried to backup Hollow Man from an original copy to a DVD-R, using latest version of DVD Decrypter as well as the latest version of DVD Shrink. Everything seemed to work fine, until I played the movie in my home player and saw that it had subtitles turned on by default. I was able to go to the title menu and "setup" to turn off the subtitles and all was well, but still it's annoying to have to do that every time.

Then again today, I'm trying to backup National Treasure from an original copy and I'm getting a similar problem. Everything seemed to burn well but this time it's showing me emotes by default instead of subtitles. For example at the beginning of the movie there's a kid in an addic and it says at the bottom of the screen (thunderstorm) then a few seconds later it says (boards creaking), when he walks across the floor. Again I was able to go into the title menu and toggle off subtitles to remove this but as I said before, it's fairly annoying to have to do each time someone watches the movie.

I'm mostly just wanting to know what I'm doing wrong that could be causing this and how to fix it. Below are the settings that I chose for each movie in DVD Shrink. I will list all options I had and the ones in bold are the ones that I kept checked.

    Hollow Man

    Audio:
    1. AC3 2-ch English 157 MB
    2. AC3 5.1-ch English 366 MB
    3. AC3 2-ch French 157 MB
    4. AC3 2-ch English 157 MB
    5. AC3 5.1-ch English 366 MB

    Subpicture:
    1. English 3 MB
    2. French 3 MB

(I actually burned a second copy of Hollow Man and tried keeping just 1 of the "5.1-ch English" tracks instead of both to see if it would make a difference, it didn't.)

    National Treasure

    Audio:
    1. AC3 5.1-ch English 426 MB
    2. AC3 5.1-ch French 365 MB

    Subpicture:
    1. English 7 MB
    2. French 4 MB
    3. Spanish 5 MB
    4. French 0.04 MB

For all other parts of the DVD's; extras, menus and such, everything seems fine. Any help with this would be much appreciated as I'd really love to get the issue nailed down before I burn many more subtitle coasters =\ Thanks in advance.

  2. Just to clarify, I do want to keep the english subtitles. I just do not want them to automatically show up like they do. Instead I'd prefer for them to work the way they do with the original discs, which is only when they are toggled on through the menu.

  3. I see this from time to time as well, I don't know what causes it and I've not looked into the solution as I don't mind having to turn it off. It is a little annoying, though.

  4. Well, the problem I have with turning subtitles completely off is at times there are some movies where a person or animal(cartoons) will say something in another language or think something and it'll emote or show it as a subtitle. A good example of what I'm talking about is with Hellboy when he digs up the corpse and it's speaking a different language, it all shows up in subtitles. =\

I'm curious what it is and why the programs I'm using for backups are changing the way the subtitles work as opposed to the way they work(correctly) with the original copy. There has to be some way to fix this.

  5. Hi-

I have no idea why this is happening to you, but PGCEdit can fix it so they don't show up until you make them do so with your remote control or through the menu:

I think the latest version of Shrink doesn't do as well with setting streams as the previous version. I have the opposite problem with a couple of Japanese language disks (the Lone Wolf and Cub series) where I want the subs on by default, set them as the default streams in Shrink, but still have to use the subtitle button to get them during playback.

I'm not sure if this is related, but if you are re-authoring in Shrink, if you right click on the title (once you've dragged it to the left frame), you will see a choice on the bottom for "set defaults". One of those defaults is whether to show a default substream, aka subtitles. Maybe that box has somehow been ticked, and if you untick it, the problem will go away.
