dvd to divx takes 2-3 hours with fair use wizard, is there any faster programs/options/methods to get a dvd backed up under a gb?

Main CPU load would be the DivX codec which is going to be the same no matter what app you use. So, no.

is their an alternative compressed format backup option which would be faster?

AVC will most likely be slower. Nero Digital ASP on the other hand should be quicker. You could also try XviD or libavcodec for your ASP MPEG-4 encoding needs.
Also there is now HDX4.
Then again if you just set poor quality settings it should be faster.
