  1. Does anyone else have this problem on the 8x powerbook superdrive*? I haven't yet tried other 8x media to see if that works better.

    I'm using Toast 6.1

is the media "1x - 8x" on the box
or does it say "8x compatible"?

if it says the former, then the media is being defaulted by your BURNER, not by Toast, to 1x setting because when the drive scans the media, that is what the laser is picking up.
    a 1x rating.

only media that sasys "8x compatible" will actually burn at 8x speed.
TDK, Apple, Samsung Be/All, and Maxell all make
    "8x compatible" media.

  3. I would put money on it being the media, the latest batch of Ritek 8x I bought (and a hundred of them at that) will not burn in my Sony DVD burner at all, will burn in my Liteon Burner, but play up in my DVD players, I am having to use my trusty old Pioneer 106D (only capable of 4X burning) to use them satisfactorily in my players.

  4. There's been a well documented problem with those Matshita drives not burning at 8x, except with a few types of media. Essentially the drive seems to be very picky about the media's code. I have the same drive and my new Tayo Yuden 8x discs only burn at 4x (although Toast reports 8x).
