  1. I got this drive a couple of months ago, it replaced my good old TDK 440N. Since i had it, it freezes on me sometimes. I have to reboot the PC to get out of it. It happens when i insert a disc in it. I ear it spinning, stopping and spinning again, then everything stops.....I'm using the 1.14 firmeware, could this be the problem ??? It does this with DVDs and Cds.

Thanks all for any input, if this has been asked and answered before, plz point me to the thread cause i searched and didn't find any.

  2. Are the discs scratched or dirty? Sounds like it's having a hard time reading them.

  3. Nope brand new ones...It's like it's getting lost after spinning....Conflicting with something?

  4. I've never had this prob, maybe you could return it?

edit - atleast try upgrading to f/w 1.19 in the mean time.

  5. Even if your discs are brand new, it could be they're a poor brand. Brand new optodisc or brand new princos will often cause the same problem, as these are the worst brand of writable DVD media you can buy. The best brands of writable DVD media are: Taiyo Yuden, TDK, Fuji, ProDisc. Below that but still good are Ritek and Memorex. ANy other brand of media I'd avoid.

I'd had the problem you describe when using no-name "house brand" DVD-R media and have sworn of all such junky media. The problem hasn't recurred.

Goto gradius.com and download v1.18, I have been using that firmware since buying the Pioneer 108D and have not had any problems. Auto bitsetting of +R blanks to DVD ROM is a BIG feature of this trouble free firmware.

  9. +R blanks...wow people still use them..lol.
its most likely to be a firmware/windows problem.
i had the same problems as you,but 1.18 seems to have solved it.i used Nils 1.18 instead of gradius,as it enabled burning of any speed, ripping at up to and beyond 12 speed, and was region free.no+R bitsetting, but i dont use +R,waste of time.

I don't mean to topic snipe but when did NIL release a 1.18? He said he was going to retire after 1.14 and where can i get it? I am using the Gradius 1.18 right now.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

Auto booktype setting is extremely useful as some older DVD players do not play -R and or +R. That problem is overcome as the end format is DVD-ROM and that will play in all DVD players.
