  1. Any W2k guru's out there?

I have a little toshiba P3-600Mhz based notepad that
I've loaded w2000 SP4 pro on. Now whatever I seem to
try, divx/xvid/mp4 video playback is choppy. It was
as smooth as silk under XP on the same notebook.

In fact it is more than just choppy.. it freezes frames and
audio for a few sec's every second or two.

    I've tried:

latest ffdshow drivers & directshow/MS Player
    Various special players
    latest Xvid/Divx codecs with directshow
Codec packs with older gen codecs

    Any ideas? Mpeg works fine.

Are you sure you have all the enhancement options of FFDSHOW unchecked ? They're cool, but they are CPU hogs.

  3. No Snoopafresh, I'm not sure as I left it at default.
    I'll check thanks..

... but given that I see the same thing
with the default drivers or ffdshow, and that the
same machine works perfectly under XP, it
seems likely to be a win 2000 issue.

  4. Found the problem. CPU was set to write through
rather than write back, via the system software
    utility.
