You can do this with a Pioneer DVR-520H-S and 320-S. With the 520 you would record via Firewire to the hard drive, insert your chapter markers (there is no chapter menu, though) and copy to a DVD. With the 320-S you only can record to VR-mode DVD-RW discs if you want to place chapter markers in specific locations. Those VR-mode discs can only be played on the Pioneer. When you record video-mode discs with the 320 you automatically get chapters in specific time increments (i.e. every 10 minutes).

I highly recommend the DVR-520H-S (I have its predecessor the 510H-S). Also, read this post:

FCE needs to be set to print to video via Firewire. I believe you turn this on via the View -> Video menu.

  3. thanks,

does thaty mean the final dvd will not have any icons for chapters, so the customer can pick which scene/s to view.
    thanks john.

    Correct.

I'm not sure if any of the consumer DVD recorders can create chapter menus. Pioneer's $4,000 professional recorder can do this, but that's probably more than you're planning to spend. Try posting in the DVD Recorders forum that you're looking for a recorder with Firewire input that creates chapter menus.

The nearest thing to this with the Pioneer is to split your movie into multiple titles. After copying the video from FCE you can create a playlist with the Pioneer and split the movie into up to 99 titles. Each title will be displayed in the menu with whatever description you give.

When the Pioneer recorders author a DVD they are in an automatic/continuous play mode. This means the disc starts playing the first title when it is inserted rather than displaying the menu. When the title is ended it automatically continues to the next title with no break in between, like playing an live concert audio CD. You can only access the menu by pressing the menu button on the remote control.

What this means is that splitting into multiple chapters is almost like having a chapter menu. The movie automatically continues playing to end from wherever you start playback and you can select specific points via a menu.

Another option you might want to consider is getting the LaCie FastCoder with CaptyDVD 2. The FastCoder takes the place of the standalone recorder and CaptyDVD 2 lets you create very nice title and chapter menus.

  5. I have a $150 stand-alone dvd recorder (GoVideo) that can do what you want (firewire input right on the front). It also can create chapters either "on-the-fly" while you're recording, or you can go back afterwards and insert the chapter markers before you "finalize" the dvd. The menu screen will have all your chapters, but it won't look as nice as something created in iDVD. The menu screen is comparable to that of a DVD created with Roxio Toast, but with a red background instead of blue.
