I want it to caputure at the highest rate possible (think this is 640x480) without problems, from vhs to pc so i can convert then to dvd.
I have looked at lots of tv cards but I cant find any with good reviews.
So any advice would be appreciated.
What I want to do is transfer all my boxing video's onto pc then put them onto dvd
Many Thanks

Full D1 dvd spec calls for 720x480 resolution (NTSC) and max. bit rate of 9800kbs. Good results can also be had @ 352x480 (half D1). Use those 2 resolutions and play with the bit rates below 9800kbs depending on length of video.
With your CPU I'd use a pci internal card- Hauppauge 250/350 are good ones. -
Yup. Hauppage PVR 250/350 should do it. (There's been several recent threads on the subject lately, many suggesting "higher end" solutions.) I'm very satisfied with my 250 card, even if I've only captured live TV.

Thanks for the quick response,
I can only find this card for £80 which is approx $140 dollars Hauppauge PCI WinTV-PVR250 Hardware DVD Encoder / Recorder + Ulead Move Factory Software
Would there be a big difference in video quality of the cards with soft pvr and hardware dvd encoder pvr for when capturing from video to pc as this is all im going to use it for.
I really want this but just wondering if there is something cheaper.
If not then I will grab one
Many Thanks

Alternative is ATI AIW cards, but they don't have full hardware mpeg encoding - just "hardware assisted", so your computer specs might have an impact on how well it behaves (which is not the case with the Hauppage card). Don't really know the price range for those either. Other, cheaper, cards would rely even more on your hardware, and are probably not an option.

At least with the hauppauge 250 you can carry on using your pc, so long as its capturing to a seperate drive.
Found it to be a good choice once i sorted the sync issues. Not bothered by small problems...

I have used the AverDVD capture card to transfer all my home VHS videos to MPEG2. never had a problem.

my advice to you is is buy from a retail store and try a few devices. Since
you have 9600, don't get an ATI AIW.
try the H.250/350, canopus advc line.
There is an ATi HDTV cap card (PCI) that you could try. max HDTV is 1920x1080.
And there is an ATi elite cap card (PCI).
I say try that one and give us a report.
The elite

Latest review I read on the Elite stated the software is "dumbed down". No Channel and/or recording automation unless one has it in a MS Media Center setup. And then you'd be using the MS Media software.
It's not ready for prime time in it's current state. -
Just splurge on the Hauppauge, and get capping.
Yes, it's a little more money, but in this case (as with all capture devices) you get what you pay for.
I started with a BT878 "soft" card, and now have 2 Hauppauge cards, and a Canopus ADVC-110.
I simply wouldn't buy anything else (except for maybe a good HDTV card...)Cheers, Jim
