  1. I have a Xvid video file that I'm trying to convert to vcd. I use Tmpgenc for all my conversions. But when I run the file it get "unsupported" message. I've been trying to solve this problem on my own by increasing priority of DirectShow and I also dl'ed an Xvid codec.
I still get the unsupported error when trying to load the video file. I already converted audio to wav (thinking that was the problem at first). What else could be wrong?

I'm used to working with Divx files which I have no problem converting with Tmpgenc.

    Seperate Q:
I have 2 different versions of Tmpgenc also... could this cause controversy between them?

https://www.videohelp.com/tmpgenc.htm#problems might have some extra tips for getting around this, although it sounds like you may have already tried the fixes suggested there. Another couple of ways I've used to get around this in the past is firstly to make sure that your video is not a number of directories down from the root of your drive - that is, it's not 5 directories down from your C:\ or whatever. I dunno why, but sometimes TMPGEnc struggles with a "deep" directory structure. Try moving the file to your C:\ directory and try reloading it. Another method I've used is to open the file in virtualdub, set video and audio to direct stream copy and create a new AVI file. That has worked in the past for me, so ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

What container? XviD can be stored in avi, mkv, ogm, mp4, nut, dsm, nsv, etc. With avi being the only one that should load fine as long as you have XviD installed.

Ok, so what do we do if it is NOT in an avi container? I am struggling to convert an xvid that ends in .mp4 into mpg format to make a DVD. In Tmpgenc I get the message that the file is cannot be opened and is unsupported.

Either load it via directshow, demux/convert to avi or frameserve (you'd be looking at dshow anyway).

  6. How do I load it via Direct Show? When I try to open it with Tmpgenc it says "cannot open/unsupported".

Added Later : I finally got it to load into Tmpgenc. I have no idea what the secret is. I just kept trying to load it in slightly different ways on two different computers until it worked. It looks like it is going to take over 4 hours so I won't know how succesful this is until then.
