Does this sound right...domain and host question.

I asked my ISP what it would cost to buy a .com and have it hosted on their server. They said it would be about 100 bucks for the name and then a monthly fee of 10 bucks. Now...the first 100 bucks, would that be forever or an annual fee? The ISP wrote to me in Japanese and it basically translated as 100 bucks commision for the name. I'm confused, but it's Sunday here so I can't call their support center.

Any ideas?

Not an expert here but do own two domains.

domain registration and hosting are seperate things even if in general they are tied together or oreded at the same time.

Pricing on each can vary greatly depending on where you get it. Neither has to be from your ISP. You do not even need to own a pc, just have access to one to upload your site files and such.

The domain registration is generally per yr, many offer discounts for multi-yr purchase.

Do a search and I think you will find domain reg under $10-US/yr and hosting from free on up.

Example: I have a .net in conjunction with ISP 650dialup.com The 56k dialup servcie is $6.50/mo and for $3/mo they host the domain. Domain reg was less than $10/yr when I paid for 10yr

I am not saying this is the best deal just using it as an example.

I live in Japan and so things are crazy expensive. I was thinking of getting my mom back home to get something registered and then since it's so cheap just send her cash for the year.

Mine was like ~$70 for 10 years. So, depending on how yours is, its either a little more expensive than usual or a LOT more (if its only for a year).

So that first hundered bucks they want could be for just a year? If so, that's expensive right?
