My friend want to make DVD's

But he is worried that his HP computer with a 333MhZ Celeron CPU can't do the job.

Since my computer has the same CPU (but more memory) I have run it in to this problem, but, with making VCD. I have a 32X burner, but, if I go above 4X the results are very poor.

Can the same happen burning a DVD?

Or are there other factors that come into play?

  2. To trancode a DVD with DVD2ONE DVDshrink or cloneDVD it will work but it will take a long time.. Maybe little wore then real time.

If your doing a capture. It all comes down to how you capture. I have a Dazzle 2 and they say to have a P2 400 to capture MPEG 2.

TO authorize a DVD my P2 400 can do it but it's very slow.

You really have to give more info on what you want to do.

He wants to take his 8mm camcorder tape(s) and put them on a DVD.

He has the (parallel port) Dazzle to import/edit the video(s) on his computer.

And I think it can render the output in the MPEG-2 DVD format.

Or if not, he also has NERO 6 which I think can also convert files to MPEG-2 DVD fomat.

So, what it comes down to is. Can his CPU handle the load of conversion and burning a DVD?

  4. No,time for a new PC.
Most video and burning software requires:
    Win98SE or newer
    256MB RAM
    550MHz CPU
    7200RPM HDD
    BTW...4x CD writing=600KB/s,4x DVD writing=5550KB/s

  5. NO way to use parallel port to import video. either a capture card or a camcorder with passthrough and firewire card in pc

anyway, time for a new one, I have a laptop, 800Mhz and is a pain in teh butt to encode even to mpeg1, sooo slow.

    what he needs....minimum:

    1.6 or faster cpu
    512Mb ram
    80Gb or more hdd
capture card or firewire with a passthrough camcorder

  6. A separate hard drive is ideal I might add.

    Say what ???

    A celeron 333 , no way .

Not to dump on your friend here or you , but there dose come a time when people need to consider an upgrade , really .

I bought a p3 800 in ebay , complete system for $330 + $40 for tansit a year or so ago , and upgrade the motherboard + cpu + ram for a little under $340.00 , this is where you need to be if your dealing with dvd .

The p3 800 on its own is capable , but if you want to bring in good quality captures , then the minimum specs for cpu is 2000mhz (actual clock cycle) , athlon xp2400 cpu meets this just .

There are a number of pci capture cards available at good prices now , but I do highly recomend any that virtualdub can capture from .

The p3 800 was tested with fly3000 in raw mode , and you need about 45 gig for 2 hours . Then an asus v6600 vivo , which has its own propriety codec for compression , but vitualdub is able to use it , and the results here were pretty good , a lttle under 3.8 gig was consumed in capturing the 2 hours .

Yes , in full pal resolution (720x576)

And as for those who say you need oodles of memory , nah to you lot , the system only had 128mb's , so there ...

A p3 800 can handle transcoding and burning the dvd project , but will take time to transcode the files , and SLOW the burner right down , or else .

As for transcoding input video to dvd quality mpeg2 :

Has anyone here ever considered frameserving from virtualdub to bbmpeg ???

Bbmpeg outputs HIGH quality dvd mpeg2 files , but if you feed it rubbish , then rubbish you get .

A note : If you consider my frameserving idea , only frame serve (I think) 50,000 frames at a time , or the mpegs will blow past the 2 gig limit .

This I hope answers your question ...

As for creating the dvd project , go grab pgcedit now , its free , and I have a guide that explains how to use it to develope compilation dvds , and how to hook up menus and titles .

Prior to burning any dvd project , you should always play it back first to check for problems .
