Now, everytime i play an avi i get an error message saying windows media has encountered a problem and needs to close. Any ideas how i can resolve this problem?

Get rid of DivX 4.31. XvID, DivX 5.x and ffdshow all handle DivX 4.x fine by the way.

  3. I did what you said but when i went to virtualdub and i tried opening an avi it came out with this:

couldnt locate decompressor for format 'div3' (microsoft high-speed mpeg-4 c3 [hack: divX Low-Motion])

  4. Download and install DivX 5.x or XviD codec (you can install both if you want but I would suggest to install only one of them to keep it simply)

XviD won't help as DivX3 not being MPEG-4, it doesn't decode it. XviD supports DivX 4.x and 5.x and this post was supposed to be about DivX 4.x

Install either DivX 5.x or ffdshow (make sure that you enable DivX 3 in the VfW config). 3ivX I think also handles DIV3.
