I agree but look at what would happen if both formats were launched. The end users would be confused about what format to use or buy and both would be losers. Neither would get the royalties that they expected. Also, you are gambling with one format dominating the other. Both camps have to be worried that they could lose and then the loser would really be in a word of hurt. Its better to combine and share the IP. The problem now is that someone will have to blink and give up their format. If you are an engineer that has been working on a particular format for a while you would get a real kick in the groin if your hard work was flushed down the toilet but that is the reality for someone.

You cut me a check for 2 million dollars... you can kick me in the groin on an HBO special event.

I don't buy into that argument. This is quite different from VHS vs. Betamax. And even that influence was more heresay than actual research. That industry has little need for more disc capacity. Even online they couldn't push a needed technology like micropayments.

I disagree people always need more capacity. How are you going to fit a 1 hr HD movie or broadcast on a DVD? You need Mpeg4 to record a 2hr movie on HD DVD. Technology will always evolve. Probably 15 yrs from now we will be seeing Hologram Movies being developed.

They did that over a year ago and it's a 2 hour movie called terminator 2 on a regular DVD in HD with WM9, one of the now approved codecs.
