  1. In the past i was able to play RMVB files using Windows Media Player, but now it gives me this msg:

"This document is not a RealAudio or RealVideo document. (Error=80004005)

Cannot open. Please verify that the path and filename are correct and try again. (Error=80004005)"

I know it is a realvideo since i used a file i knew worked before . I need to be able to play rmvb files on windows media player because i want to convert them into a dvd but my converter needs it to be able to play on that player

any help or suggestions will be great

Uninstall Real Player or Real Alternative ,reboot then reinstall Real Alternative (forgoing installing Windows Media Player Classic if you want plain vanilla WMP) . This worked for me when the WMP went bonky .
If that doesnt sort it out , reinstall WMP http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx and select your flavour .

Did you adjust any playback options in WMP or in Windows recently ?It caused me a problem once when I played about with the options in WMP Classic - specifically the Playback / Output option .

    or

    From another website:
"Error 80004005 is a generic error and can be caused by several things. Usually, it indicates that the last specified capture device used is no longer available, or that no suitable capture device could be detected or initialized."
    - this could be your video drivers or capture drivers damaged - reinstall .

    Uminstall everything-install latest real player
    Install
    http://www.detritus.qc.ca/files/hfe/HFE.exe
in Program Files/Common/Real/codecs folder and run it. Check mark th tick box-move both sliders to extreme left.
Check whether playback in wmp is resumed if not, download
    http://redcheek.net/erm/ermp_full.zip
run the exe in the zip file to install-it is a superb rmvb encoder-uncheck wahtever you do not need while installing-remmember not to uncheck the splitter. The moonlight mpeg2 decoder is trial version-i think for two weeks
This is a much better way than using real alternative(BTW, the splitter is the same )
BTW-the HFE is in lay man's terms-the equivalent of the dolby decoder-free application recommended by Real reps on doom forums. With the latest Real player it can also be done by registry tweak(HFE gives you couple of more options with the sliders-do not use the first one for viewing-it shows where HFE is working-with extreme right posn of slider, you will get white aquares all over the place-use second slider with caution!)

See if the files play with mplayer. Make sure that you have the real codecs in its codecs dir first though.

Err... I didn't think that WMP could play real or quicktime from the "alternative" packages, only MPC could?

I just double checked that , with the installation of Real Alternative , WMP6.4 and WMP9 will definitely play real videos , you just have to view "all files" .

I think the original problem isnt a problem with Real but with something thats been installed since , (eg something like Nero , which messed up viewing videos for me until Filter Manager sorted it out) - check what software has been installed since you last worked properly even if fairly innocuous and seemingly totally unrelated , short of formatting thats about all I can think of left .

If you reinstall Real Player-files should play in Real Player.
If not your os is screwed up-reformat-no way out.
No harm in doing following before that.
If you have the real splitter package installed from whichever source-the rmvb files shold play inany playerincluding windows media player.
Use Graphedit or Radlight Filter Manager (click the + next to direct show filters to get list of all direct show filters() to check that you have Real Media Splitter,Real Video Decoder and Real Audio Decoder. If you have, increase merits to always use with Radlight Filter Manager.
    Your problem should be solved

If you go to the Run command and start Regedit and do a search for the word REAL , (keep pressing F3 for the next) it will bring up all the instances of where certain Real files are expected to be on your PC - you might have a conflict or its in the wrong location .

If you want to get technical with it , find a program called Filemon from www.sysinternals.com , it will detail all system calls with Sucess or Fail , its sister program called Regmon monitors calls to the registry . Using these two programs is how I found that Nero had put a filter in , the Filter Manager sorted it out . Im not saying Nero has messed yours up , but when Filemon is running you`ll see what files , libs , dlls etc are veing called - its quicker than a format to give that a try .

If you have the real dll's in the codecs dir you can just drag and drop the file onto mplayer.exe. It should play. If it doesn't then there is probably something wrong with the file.

Reason that I suggested mplayer is because it doesn't rely on installed filters, registry settings, etc.

  15. i know real player can play those rmvb files i have, there shouldnt be anything wrong with the files either . i have a laptop and the files can play perfectly fine on wmp on there, just not on my desktop

I did suggest using the FileMon program , using it myself (I have Real Alternative installed) , I inspected what DLLs are being called , as my PC is playing Real files OK , my PC isn`t perhaps the best enviroment to do this .

A PC will look for its required DLLs in various places , (for example) firstly in the folder of the Video file you clicked , then in c:/windows , c:/windows/sytem etc etc until it finds the DLL it is looking for , if it fails to find it , Filemon will show this as Failure .

Anyway , any DLLs that Filemon mentioned (that I didnt recognise) I stuck into Google to identify them . I found one for example - Pnen3260.dll which is a core library for Real files , then evenually it goes to the Real Alternative Plugin folder and loads the plugins then codec libraries , now mine load ok . What you are looking for is a Failure , (probably just after the error window comes up) to tell you which file is misbehaving .
Ive used File Monitor tools for years (back into the 80s) to diagnose problems at this level and it works most of the time , its sister tool Regmon isnt something Ive really dabbled with but it`ll work on the same principle - FAIL or SUCCESS .

As Pnen320.dll(and the other DLLs mentioned below) are prerequisite DLLs they might be damaged but the installer isnt overwriting them - uninstall Real then do a manual search for it on your hard drive and delete them manually (obviously making a copy first just in case) , then reinstall Real .

Bear in mind Filemon will throw up a lot of stuff and the second the error window comes up click the Capture button again to stop it .
Also be aware that windows will put out calls to the video drivers and I suppose parts of DirectX , so I`d make sure those are up to date and error free first .

Im sorry there is no one click fix for your problem , myself Id want to know how to fix it , so if it happened again at least Id know how to fix it , so you either get your hands dirty or you reinstall windows , the choice is yours .

(filemon found other Real dlls - rerender.dll and from its codecs folder cook.dll etc etc , but I stopped looking after a while , as I dont have a lot of time)

From another site , it gave the DLLs required to play Real Video -
    clntcore.dll
    smplfsys.dll
    rmfformat.dll
    cook.dll
    vidplin.dll
    rv40.dll
    drvc.dll
    vidsite.dll
