I have dvds that have VCR content and some lower quality DVR content. I am going to be shrinking at least 2x to pack as much onto a 4.7 as I can before it is unbearable to watch (hopefully 7.5 hrs worth). The content is actually a seminar and has almost no action. I think I should be using Max Smoothness but will it really help the picture quality if I am shrinking 2 or 3 times over? Also, will doing the deep analysis help or am I wasting my time? I will be compressing the audio seperately before shrinking (LPCM to AC3).

To squeeze that much content onto a DVD you would be better off using a proper Mpeg encoder than a transcoder like DVDshrink. With an encoder you could reduce the resolution to half D1 (352 x 480 for NTSC) or even VCD resolution (352 x 240 for NTSC). This will offer better quality than DVDshrink will give at such low bitrates/high compression.
If you want to maintain existing DVD structure (though I would guess not from what you said) you could always investigate DVDRebuilder for this. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those that understand binary... -
I do want to make a menu and submenu for each segment and also keep it highly compatible with DVD players. Reducing the resoultion sounds perfect. I downloaded DVD Rebuilder and it said to install AviSynth but DVD Reuilder still won't install (it is the beta version). Will can I reduce the resolution and keep it in DVD format with DVD RB?

I would also suggest 352x480 if you re-encode. If you DO use DVD shrink, definitely use Deep Analysis and use Max Smooth on that much content.
-
Ah, I found the Half-D1 option! But, will cutting the resolution down reduce compatibility on DVD players?

I guess I don't have CCE according to DVD Rebuilder so I'm just doing a "no compression" Half-D1 conversion. Log screen says "demultiplexing..." Since I am using VobEdit to de/remux this anyway (LPCM to AC3 conversion) can VobEdit also do my Half-D1 conversion then also? This would kill two birds.
Oops, I can't Half-D1 without an encoder so I found QuEnc and am using that. Using "Single-Pass" I get:
Avisynth open failure:
Script error: there is no function named "mpeg2source" (C:\TEMP\D2VAVS\V010000000001001.avs, line 5)
This happens for all vobs. -
Mpeg2source requires a plugin (IIRC, MPEG2SOURCE3.DLL).
ICBM target coordinates:
26° 14' 10.16"N -- 80° 16' 0.91"W -
For the collection of avisynth plugins look here:
http://www.avisynth.org/warpenterprises/
Scroll down and download dgmpgdec 121. It contents DGIndex and DGDecode.dll. Place DGDecode.dll in avisynth plugin folder - it will autoload. I don't use Rebuilder but if you have errors again tell it to use DGIndex for creation of d2v files.
Ah, well, you solve it. -

Any version of DVD Rebuilder i installed only required avisynth 2.5.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Ok, I know I'm doing something the hard way. What's easier than this:
VobEdit - demux dvd to .m2v and .wav
BeSweet - .wav to .ac3
WinAvi - .m2v to MPEG1(.mpg) (this is my half-resolution but will still fill the TV screen right?)
ReJig - demux .mpg to .m2v (since WinAvi won't go straight to .m2v)
IfoEdit - remux new .m2v and .ac3
*WinDVD chokes on the output of all this (Windows error) but video continues to play behind the error - I will burn and try at home tonight. -
Nero Vision Express 3 or Sonic MyDVD 6 are easier. They allow menus, will auto fit to DVD and output to AC3.
-
And give you little control over the quality of the output. Given how much you want to compress these, I would not trust it to either of these tools. The only change I woudl possibly suggest is to consider the HC encoder in place of quenc. It is faster, and possibly of better quality (the jury is still out on HC's low bitrate abilities.
