Do you mean you uninstalled the Primary Channel? You don't need to uninstall the controller itself, just the channel. Have you tried to roll back the driver? Or do a system restore?

Also try booting in safe mode, you may be able to access the system restore or the Device Manager if you aren't able to in regular mode.

If you have the OS disc, you should also be able to repair it from that.

looks like it is the primary channel.....tried rollin back driver, but it says that there is no backed up driver....for some reason i am not able to boot in safe mode...everytime i try it just loops back to the same screen and only way i can boot is through last good known configuration..i can access device mgr in regular mode....i dont have a windows cd just a recovery cd that came with my computer....so you think i will just have to do a complete system restore as in reformat my hd??.....or is it something else you mean by system restore...i just dont understand why windows installs the primary channel and gets the software for it but then when it tells me to reboot, its as if nothing happend and it detects again and again i have to reboot....thanks for the help and sorry for the noob questions.....

XP has a system restore in the accesories folder, available in the start menu. If a restore point has been lately set, you may be able to return to the point before you encountered the problem. Doesn't always work when the OS has major changes to the registry.

Other than that, it depends a litttle on the setup of your OS. OEM versions of XP may not be exactly the same as the retail versions. If all else fails and you can back up your files, reinstallation of the OS is one option.

The restore discs may also do a OS restore or repair without damaging your files, but I would never depend on that.

I have unistalled the primary channel on a couple of systems, and it just reinstalls it with no problem. Maybe your OS version is slightly different.

Hey, glad you got it fixed. Did your buddy have any idea why those programs might have caused the conflict? Might be good to know for the future.

  8. It's most likely the virtual drives were tied to the IDE channel for some reason and caused glitches with the reinstallation. I've never seen it happen myself but I don't usually leave the virtual drives on either.
